Troubleshooting Marine Diesels

This book provides a great overview of the diesel engine. It is well written and does a good job of providing enough detail without overwhelming with too much information. As someone unfamiliar with diesel engines, I read this prior to potentially purchasing a boat with a diesel. The information in the book gave me the tools I needed to make a reasonable evaluation.

This is a great book for someone who has only a basic knowledge of marine diesel engines. Everything is explained simply and thoroughly without being too simple. It has given me the ability to diagnose several problems and know where to look for the solutions. After reading this book, I feel qualified to maintain my own engine - something I did not feel before.

Ok- I think Nigel Calders book is better- but I like this book to. The writer has a good style. I particularly like the troubleshooting checklists, that are orgainized from most likely cause to least likely. Also has some good decision making flow charts. I think there is a lot of practical information here presented in an easy to read style. It is one of the two diesel books I always refer to. Would I buy again? YES

This book turned out to be everything it promised. I own a 44' Ocean Alexander yacht with twin diesel motors as well as a 8KW diesel generator.After reading the book, for the first time I felt very comfortable in the engine room and knew what I was looking at and for.It's easy reading and written at a level anyone should be able to understand.I highly recommend it.

Nigel Calder has done it again! This book is a must have for anyone who sails a diesel boat. It is packed with beautiful illustrations and descriptive text that gives even a non-mechanical type the information to properly understand and maintain a marine diesel.

We have used it a few times to troubleshoot small issues. It is a great book to have on our boat since neither of us are mechanical.

This is a very basic "repair" manual for marine diesel engines. It's good for initial diagnosis of problems and some maintenance but if your going to do any repairs, it will not replace a manual that goes into detail, which is what you will want and need. The illustrations are all hand drawn and not detailed enough for precise diagnoses. It's not a bad book to have in your collection, but you will need a more detailed manual to do any actual repairs.

A good guide as to where to look when a problem arises, but definitely not a repair manual. You can use this to set up a periodic maintenance program for an engine.

By far, this is the best marine application diesel engine book I ever bought. Super well written text. Well made and thought out illustrations. I own many diesel books, but this one is going on the boat as a permanent reference. This is the third book I bought in this collection (International Marine Sailboat Library). I also have marine electrics and sail trim (or something like that...)

This book is great value for the price, covers all you need to know about troubleshooting full of easy to read diagrams for your marine diesel.For the money I did not expect a hard back edition Peter Compton has made an excellent job of compiling this book for easy reading even for the novice. I have never worked on diesel engines only petrol which is a whole different especially the marine diesel I have the repair manual and maintanance manual but in my opinion you also need this if you are a diesel novice like me
