Does it matter which way the eggs are placed in the cooker? Also, I didn’t get the egg piercer. Do the eggs explode if you don’t use one?

I believe that it is best to put the fatter end facing down. You do not need to use an egg piercer. I don't, and I've never had an egg explosion. I always prep a bowl of cold water before hand, to cool off the eggs off after steaming. I rarely have any problems removing the egg shells, it just takes a few moments.

My water measuring cup print smeared off. I never scrubbed or washed it harshly. Has anyone experienced this defect?

Mine is still intact, but honestly I don’t even look at the measurements as I think they are not correct. I usually just fill the cup to the top with the water and put it in the receptacle. Don’t worry about it! The measurements are totally off anyway!

New purchase. Any tips on best way to use to hard boil eggs?

The directions that come with the 3-in-1 are very easy to follow. The buzzer will go off when it is ready based on the amount of water. The bottom of the water cup has a tiny nail to poke a small hole in each egg before cooking. This will keep the egg from breaking during cooking. When the eggs are done, put them in the refrigerator to cool enough to peel. Eggs cooked in the 3-in-1 are so easy to peel.

Does this shut off automatically when eggs are done?

No it doesn't shut off automatically. You have to turn it off manually.
