What is the difference between exp 16 and exp 16 3d strings ?

It means that its part of a three pack. Simple as that! So no difference in the product at all.

I noticed the total string tension is 4 pounds lighter than non coated. Does less tension make a mellower sound?

not sure if its a mellower sound per se. it does make them easier to play. good strings and they do sound good

How well do these strings last if they are put through different tuning setups frequently?

Haven't put thru lots of different tuning setups but so far no problems. Great strings - very flexible without breaking.

Debate time! :D In your opinion which is the better-sounding string: the D'Addario EXP phosphor bronze or Elixer nano-web phosphor bronze?

The Elixirs have a more trebly snap to them - a very specific sound, maybe a little tinny. The EXPs are definitely warmer, fuller in the bass. I prefer the EXPs for sound.
