Ten-year-old baseball fanatic Yankee Irving (voiced by newcomer Jake T. Austin) is always the last one picked for sandlot baseball games. But when Babe Ruth's prized bat is stolen during the 1932 World Series, Yankee steps up to the plate to help retrieve it for his beloved idol. He embarks on a wild cross-country journey that teaches him the stuff real heroes are made of, and along the way, Yankee learns the importance of perseverance and the true meaning of friendship.

A sweet, family-friendly (clean) movie
It's not difficult to understand why this one wasn't big at the box office - it's not the typical polished, splashy, toilet-humored cartoon that children are accustomed to these days! If you're looking for something in that vein, you'll want to look elsewhere. If you're looking for a clean, family-friendly cartoon, however, this one should be right up your alley.I won't repeat the other reviews and give a run-down of the plot - others have done a wonderful job already. I will tell you that our whole family sat down last night (dad, mom and four children ages 12, 8, 2 and newborn) and watched the whole thing, start to finish. That doesn't happen very often! There were two or three unnecessarily foolish moments (what we'd call toilet humor) but I don't recall any sexual double entendres or moments that made me squirm. I can't say that for many of today's movies. The parents have a loving relationship, dad and mom work hard (he at the ballpark, she in the home) and the son reacts kindly to neighborhood bullies and has a great love for his parents. He's not a smart mouth, dad's not a dolt and mom's not a self-centered ding-dong. How refreshing! We liked it and, if you're in the market for a kind-hearted (and yes, predictable) movie for the family, you might, too.Recommended!

Fantasy tale for the baseball fan
This dramatic and enjoyable animated fantasy tale of Yankee Irving (voiced by Jake T. Austin), a young baseball fan who is trying to return Babe Ruth's stolen bat and restore his father's (Mandy Patinkin) name is touching and help the Yankees win the World Series. Yankee us aided by Screwie, a magical talking baseball (voiced by Rob Reiner who also narrates). Once he retrieves Darlin;, a magical talking bat (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg), he must elude by opposing Cubs' pitcher, Lefty Maginnis (William H. Macy) who originally stole the bat for the evil Cubs' owner. What I liked about this animated film was that it was neither bittersweet nor too silly. It respects its audience. However, the film's producers Christoher and his wife, Dana Reeve did change some facts about Ruth and the Yankees to fit the story. There are strong messages of hope, integrity and bravery in this tale. This is wonderful family film.

Inspirational and Cute
FABULOUS movie!!! I showed it to my class last year as we were preparing for a field trip to a baseball game and I thought it would be cute.THEY LOVED it. I had never heard of it and it had came up in a search on google. So cute, so funny, and meaningful. This year we are doing an author study on Robert Burleigh. He wrote a great book based on Babe Ruth. I showed this as a treat on Friday afternoon for a little while. The kids loved it once again. They were laughing and asked if we could finish it.I then showed it to my 3 year old as a Friday Night Mommy and Son date night. We had popcorn and watched this. He loved it. He laughed and he loved the funny characters.

Plastic wrap was ripped
When I first opened package, the outside plastic covering was all ripped up.. found that odd. This is a Christmas present for my child so I just took that off. If it was a gift, I wouldn't have used it.

A Good Weird Baseball Fantasy Black Comedy Animated Film Not To Be Missed
A simple story with a shy and kind baseball loving boy who out smarts the bad guys with the help from a two talking objects won't spoil. Two things which bothers me is that the story was a little slow at times, the boys acting wasn't the greatest at times and there's no special features, but it's a treat for the whole family. There's a bit of mild grossness, 7/10

Good.
When I realised this was about American baseball, I groaned. But I have to say this is a well constructed and watchable film.As usual no film jargon.Yes the children will like it, but adults will as well. The voice overs are terrific.Worth the money. RJC.

A thoroughly good story!!
Wasn't sure about this dvd but bought it on the basis of other recommendations and the fact that I have a adverse reaction to some of the animated "tripe" thats put out for kids especially on TV etc. I watched it (several times) with my critical 5 year old (going-on-15!!) Grandson. He was enthralled. He and I thoroughly loved it - the story is heart-warming and good - no American sugary sentiment. A credit to the memory of Christopher Reeve. Lovely. Liz in Wyke.

I got this for my five year old, but ended up watching it as a family. It was brilliant we all really enjoyed watching it as it was a feel good film. My son loves watching it again and again so money well spent. The characters are great and a good storyline.

i liked the story very much but the only thing i didn't like was that talking baseball! if that happened in real life a child would run screaming out of the room.
