for the price this camera is very good. I was quite surprised by how fast the auto focus is compared to my D 3000. I recently shot panning pictures and the autofocus worked quite well for this type of tricky photography. the frame rates per second are a little slow, but I knew that before purchasing the camera.a lot of the features and buttons are more intuitive to this camera than my d3000. the autofocus speed in the Live View is a little slow, however I do not use that feature it uses a lot more battery power.I have not used the video mode, because I do not shoot much video and that was not with the camera was purchased for.this camera is pure Nikon quality. it is not as fast or have quite as many fancy features as the professional line cameras, however if you were on a budget and you know how to use a camera thoroughly, this camera can do all that the intermediate cameras can do.this camera uses all of my prior Nikon mounting lenses, which is a great feature of Nikon. would I rather have a d610 or D 7200 yes, but I don't have the 1500 to 2000 dollar budget. this camera body was well worth the $233.00.thus I now have two functioning camera Bonnie that will get me through well I save my money for the more expensive Pro models. Also, Amazon shipping was great and I received the camera within 2 days.

Great deal, great camera
I'm by no means a big photographer, but I got this as an upgrade from my D60 that I got probably 7 years ago or so. The main thing that prompted me to get a new DSLR was the D60's lack of video capability. Since I already had several nice Nikon VR lenses and didn't want to worry about figuring out compatibility, and since this D3100 body was so cheap, I decided to take a risk of getting a gray market product. So far, I haven't been disappointed, and I might actually get another one in the future to give more flexibility for video shoots with multiple shots. It works well for me for both video and still photography, and at the end of the day, I don't think the camera is going to be the thing that makes a good video/photograph. If you're not a professional photographer, I would think you'll do more than get by with this camera. The value to price ratio just seems ridiculously high with this deal.If you're interested in an example of video shot with the camera, check out this video (the front, straight on view was shot with my D3100 and a 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens) -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMDYcoqbZnsAnd here are some pics (shot with the same lens): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fi3c5csb2njks8y/AADddQbIa2CUgx6CVDxvrbMqa?dl=0

Nice upgrade from D70s
We've been using a D70s since it came out for our DSLR action and it was time to upgrade. The D3100 is a great body; unfortunately one lens I have the Nikkor 50mm F/1.8 AF lens does not autofocus since this body needs the AF-S lenses but otherwise our existing investment in glass is preserved. The unit is smaller and lighter than the D70s was and the improved picture quality is very noticeable. The Ken Rockwell site still recommends this model unless you're a professional, I'm glad I followed his recommendation.

Satisfied
I got around to writing review after more than a year since buying this camera. It meets my needs perfectly because I was looking for light-weight camera that gives good results indoors and has low shutter-lag. Indoor photos don't washout the subjects with excessive flash allowing natural skin tones to show. Shutter lag is low enough for capturing fleeting smiles. Size and bulk is small enough to hang on the neck or carry in a backpack. Most of my pictures are taken in Auto-mode but I love the results. Only once I fiddled around with manual focus, ISO and Aperture settings for 4th of July fireworks. Pictures I got were magazine-worthy.Battery life is long enough for over 400 shots, 16GB card is sufficient for lasting over couple of trips. I use Picasa for organizing photos and Sony's PMB for importing.I skipped buying the kit from Costco because I know I would not carry around two different lenses, let alone switch them. Instead I bought 18mm-105mm lens and thank my good judgment every time I use my camera. Lens is good enough for wide angles and perfect for portraits. Bokeh effect is as expected (can never get that from even high-end aim-and-shoots). I have taken shots of rainbows, closeups of kids, super close-ups of flowers, city-life, dance performances, beaches, sunsets and whatever else I fancy.I have never felt buyer's remorse for owning this. I just thought it is worth the expense to capture priceless memories of my kids before they grow up. I only wish D3100 had adjustable LCD like D5100's for taking ground-level photos or other unusual angles.

Good Replacement For D70
I bought this as a replacement for a Nikon D70 that finally quit working. It was actually a gift replacement which was for my grandson. He loves the camera and it works with his lenses. He particularly likes the movie capabilities and we just returned from a winter photo trip to Yellowstone where it performed quite well. We just wish that it had exposure bracketing capabilities for high dynamic range scenes. Other than that, it works quite well and it was a great price as a used camera purchase from an Amazon Merchant.
