MOOG Theremini Theremin Synthesizer

I AM ADDICTED ALREADY!!! My Theremini arrived in decent packaging with a double box. The primary product box has an easy quick set up single sheet, which made it super fast to set up and start making noise. I have read reviews complaining about this unit not holding calibration, so I will say that I did not have that issue at all. HOWEVER, this is a very sensitive instrument, so remember that large metal objects and even your own body can change the temperament of the various settings, which may mean that you will have to re-calibrate if you change the voice preset. The calibration is super easy to do though, so stay calm and respect the instrument. The theremin is VERY difficult to play, if you are looking to play something structured and musical. But it is also super EASY to play, if you want to experience a constant relationship between your body and sound. This requires one to be very aware of the body and to use intuitive movement to relate your body to sound. It is almost like using dance to inspire sound rather than using sound to inspire dance. Because there are so many presets to experiment with, it is possible to make beautiful improvisational sounds. The other part I love is the display shows you your pitch and allows you to change your root note as well as to set scales to things like "gypsy, spanish, arabian, egyptian" so that the scale has that preset feeling to it. The options are ENDLESS! I just LOVE this unit. And for the very good price point, this unit allows the new theremin student to experience classic theremin playing, as well as just have a great time with improvising sounds. THANK YOU MOOG! I do recommend the use of headphones for those who do to torture others living in the home. But also because when others in your home hear how interesting and fun the unit is to play with, they all want a turn!!! HAHAHA.

I got the thermin bug by accident when I came across "those" videos...same as probably everyone else has watched many times. I chose the Theremini because I thought it would at least be a fun introduction to the theremin, and I could judge whether I would ever want a "real" theremin. I do really like the Theremini, and gave it five stars because it is good at what it does. I am hoping to use it in my writing and recording work eventually. I am a composer, mostly for harp, but have done a lot of piano, clarinet and Native American flute writing as well. I thought theremin with harp would be fantastic if I should actually learn to play. I realized right away that I needed to improve the "theremin" sound. I toyed with the idea of buying an amp, but instead hooked it up to my audio interface (to my studio computer) so it plays out of my good speakers. Immediate, awesome improvement in the sound. The bonus is, I can record it as an audio track directly into Sonar, to mix with harp tracks, etc. That is...if I DO get good enough at actually playing it. The theremini makes practicing more fun because of all of the experimentation you can do. And you can turn the dial so it hits the notes more easily, which is helpful in the beginning for sure. The editing software works fine. If you like the chromatic scale and are tired of endless turning the dial to get it when playing some of your favorite "presets," you can use the editing software to save it so that the chromatic scale automatically comes up when you go to a particular preset. You can also replace any of the presets on your theremini with others. You can find dozens of presets for the Theremini, load them into the software, and put them on the Theremini if you so desire. If I can only learn to play, this instrument will be very useful in my work.

Epic! I wanted something unique and interesting to add to my sound bath experiences. This is a video of me playing after only practicing for about an hour or two. It is very helpful that it displays what note you're playing. The pitch correct also makes this instrument perfect for beginners like me who have never touched a Thermin before. I love how it is a knob and you can set the degree of pitch control. I also love how there are different settings so it doesn't always sound like a classic one. My favorite is definitely the ethereal setting and ghostly. Very fun to play. Very expressive

I fell in love with this as soon as I came across it on YouTube. What a cool idea to produce music by waving your hand in air. In practice, however, it requires exactly that - a lot of (time for) practice and a lot of patience, neither of which I have much of. So the idea was really cool, and the build quality was good too, but the manual it comes with is insufficient in showing the calibration steps (the Theremin itself does a decent job but still not fully), and I ended up returning it. If you have a lot of patience, though, it’d be really cool to play well!

The digital features are epic. It's a full on Moog synth with analogue grade variability. YOU WANT TO GET IT ON A MIC STAND....otherwise expect LOT'S of instability. (Which makes it even harder to learn to play) Mic stands are typically 5/8th, this need a converter to 3/8th. Mine was a new manufacture with the 1.1 firmware. However, the top note in your specified range will be slightly sour and cannot be up tuned with pitch correction off. It good with it on though. I am very new to playing Ether Phones and this currently seems insurmountable to me with pitch correction off. I can play (very poorly) with the Ionian scale set and using the range setting of C3 to C6. I will be playing in the Chromatic scale to practice the finer movements if I ever get better at this. The default voice is improved CONSIDERABLY by setting the effect to half power. The National anthem is about all I can play on this right now. For background, I sing, have perfect (or very nearly perfect) pitch, and play the piano at expert level. I write and compose my own work. And yes, this is a difficult instrument to learn to play. I recommend a stool. I don't seem to be able to stand still enough to make it happy. Also, perfect pitch is basically a curse with this device, EVERYTHING SOUNDS CLEARLY OUT OF KEY ALL THE TIME. Probably one of the least expensive ways to get introduced to Moog sounds. It's a lot of fun as well. Definitely not an exact method for playing a specific note (like a keyboard), but I can tell that with a little practice, there are a few techniques that seem to be repeatable and reliable. In these days of AI (not hating here), if you are not adding other acoustic instruments like the guitar, for example, to your music, then the Theremini could serve the purpose of adding that human element.

I'm not a musician, although I've played an instrument or two. I simply have been enchanted by the concept of controlling sound by hand position in the air. I tried a small kit version and enjoyed it, but the sound quality and control sensitivity and limits were naturally disappointing. I just don't have the time and all to try building one of my own, and I couldn't find anything that seemed to have sufficient quality for a low price. There were some models much less expensive than the Theremini, but they appeared to be basic models, if not minimal. I finally decided to go for it, and I am happy I did, so far. I have not been concerned about tuning, I'm just enjoying all the preset effects, playing around with them without trying to play any tunes. To me, playing regular music on a Theremin seems like using a Ming vase to hold dandelions. Well, that may be a little extreme, but the freedom of control and variety of sound available sets my mind to flights of fancy. Each preset seems to call forth a different style of play, evoking various visions or meditative states of mind; the sounds dictate movements which control the sounds which lead to new variations. So, I don't know about the technical aspects or the quality needed for performance art, it's just a great personal experience for me, and I don't think the lesser options would have been so satisfying.

I've started live performances again, and the PAIA kit theremin I built a quarter decade ago wasn't up to snuff when I pulled it out of the mothballs. So I got this, and I"m glad I did. I thought "I know how to play a Theremin!" and figured I wouldn't use the pitch correction. I was wrong. Turned up about a quarter of the way, it's a good "cheat" as I get my intonation back. Turned up ALL the way, then it's almost synth-like. Some of the many presets are useless, but several are awesome for an old Theremin fan like myself. Well designed, the "digital" part of it is incredibly well implemented, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who knows what a Theremin is and who can afford it. It isn't cheap, but it's a bargain in my opinion.

La prima volta che ho provato a giocare con un "Theremin" fu circa 37 anni fa in un negozio di strumenti musicali e mi colpì molto. Non potendo acquistarlo per le mie finanze di allora, è rimasto sempre un desiderio. Dopo tanti anni ho ritrovato questo modello che ho subito comprato e ho iniziato ad usare con molta soddisfazione. Hanno davvero rivoluzionato lo strumento, a parte che c'è la possibilità di sfruttare un sintetizzatore davvero completo, ma attraverso il computer e la sua porta USB è possibile rendere permanenti le modifiche ai suoni (preset) di fabbrica e di scaricarne altri, modificarli e rinominarli, direttamente dal sito MOOG. C'è la possibilità di suonare lo strumento il modalità "nativa" o scegliendo le varie scale perchè al suo interno ha un 'autotune' regolabile così rendere ancora più intuitiva e precisa l'esecuzione. Ha molte funzionalità che per chi produce musica elettronica sono irrinunciabili. Davvero felicissimo di aver effettuato questo acquisto.

Commandé il y'a 3 jours avec livraison entre 1 et 2 semaines, je l'ai reçu ce matin. Bravo pour le service. Je connaissais l'histoire du thérémine depuis longtemps mais ne trouvais aucun intérêt à en acheter un. C'était un bruit un peu irritant et difficile à jouer. Puis, il y'a quelques jours, j'ai vu une vidéo sur YT au sujet de ce modèle. 3 choses m'intéressaient: 1) la possibilité de jouer la gamme des notes ou jouer toute la courbe de fréquences: 2) la liste de presets pour changer de sonorité: 3) la sortie CV pour le brancher sur mes autres synthés. Au bout de 4 heures, je n'utilise plus la "pitch correction"; les possibilités infinies de modulation entre les deux antennes sont incroyables. Selon la forme d'onde, on peut même moduler la tonalité avec l'antenne "volume". J'ai maintenant envie de le brancher sur un de mes synthés modulaires pour voir les effets sur les filtres. Rajouter un processeur multi-effets comme le Zoom G3Xn, que j'ai acheté récemment, et vous avez le plus grand contrôleur de synthé qui existe. Même si vous n'êtes pas musicien, vous pouvez l'utiliser pour exprimer vous pensées intérieures. Je donnerais 10 étoiles si je pouvais. En plus, c'est un Moog, c'est du sérieux.

Arrived well ahead of advertised delivery time A new take on a very old instrument, you still have to know how to play Theremin and I found the pitch correction more of a distraction than a help. The sounds are good you get a Moog synth!. One good feature it shows the note you are playing on it's display very helpful if you are learning. Very easy to set up and get started. I also own an original Moog Theremin there is no comparison with the original sound. but If you want alternative sounds and that pitch readout for learning this is a good buy
