Will this define which cable is which?** A: Yes, but it will require patience and a bit of time. First unplug all LAN cables from your switch or router in the closet. Also unplug any computers or printers or switches in all of the rooms. This tester is not meant to test “live” cables. If you are testing jacks (not terminated cables) you will need a tested jumper cable for each end (test the jumpers first). Connect the master CT468 to one of the lines in the closet and turn it on. I recommend the “on setting” to save time (the S is for slow). Then go room to room with the CT468 remote and plug the remote in (if testing jacks plug in the known good jumper cable). It should light up in a couple of seconds if that line in the closet goes to that room. Once you get lights on the remote you have identified which room corresponds with the cable the CT468 master is connected with in the closet. Let the lights cycle at least two times to check for continuity on all pairs in that cable. If one or more of the lights do not light up or they do not light up in order (1 then 2 then 3 then 4 then 5 then 6 then 7 then 8) then you have a problem in that cable. Note G is only for Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cables, which are rarely used in a home environment. You will need to repeat this process for each cable in the closet and each room. V/R Steve **Q: what does is mean the lights just keep sycaling?** A: When you are doing the test, the lights continue to go through the cycle 1, 2, 3, etc., testing the pairs. If there is a problem with a pair, the lights cycle will indicate by going 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 5, etc., indicating a problem between pair 5 & 6. You might not see that the first time so the lights will just continue to run through the sequence so you can continue to see where the problem pair is located. It just means that the lights continue until you turn off the test. It works great and it’s very simple to use. Once you use it, you will understand what the “sycaling” means. It just doesn’t do it once and then stops, it continues to sycaling through. **Q: light goes on from 1 to 8 but g does not light. what is G for?** A: The G is for ground, if there is a ground is will show, if no ground is in the cable assembly not to worry. Most cable assembly's today do not have a ground. **Q: There are 3 different testers for sale, which do I need to test my cat 6 cables installed by electrician and my own cables? Connection is spotty.** A: One that does rj45. Cat6 cables have rj45 connectors. This tester will only tell you if the wires are connected in the proper order, not if the quality of the connection is good enough. The device is simple, accurate, and very easy to use. The detachable remote piece is useful for verifying and/or finding downstream cable connectors. The plastic build of the device means it's light and easy to toss in a bag, but it also feels a little underwhelming. My only real issue with it is the detachable piece is on the looser side and falls off fairly easily, there isn't enough tension in the slot. I remedied this by putting a piece of masking tape along the inside edge to snug up the slot without negatively impacting its use. If you are looking for something simple, light, and low cost to simply check network cable ends, this will absolutely do the job.
