For those who were thinking of just using the headset w/out the amplifier
My work has me on long telcons but won't pay for headsets. Not wanting to shell out for the full system, I thought that since the S10 headset has a RJ11 plug, I could just swap out the handset on the phone for the headset and not bother with buying the full system. It worked...kind of. The good: the headset was comfortable and I could hear just as well as if using the handset. It also allowed me to type on the computer, take notes, or whatever without getting a neck ache from squeezing the handset between my head and shoulder. The bad: The mike boom only extended down to my cheek and wasn't very close to my mouth so I got people on the other end saying I was coming in soft and I had to talk louder (which then started to annoyed my office mates). I guess that's why you need the amp unit (I'm speculating that the amp is for both input/output). Additionally, since I swapped out the handset but still needed the disconnected handset to hang up the phone my phone calls were 1) slip headset on if it wasn't already on, 2) pick up the handset, 3) have phone conversation, 4) hand up handset, 5) take of headset if I was leaving desk. I'm a get up and walk around type of guy so I'm constantly putting on and taking off the headset. Also, at first, there was a few times I picked up the disconnected handset and started to answer the call, but I quickly got over than problem. In the end, I decided that I like the headset concept and needed to buy the whole system (the S12 or S22 replaced/is replacing the S10). The S12 headset's boom is longer so it's closer to the mouth and since you plug the handset into the amp unit, you can easily switch between the two w/out having to unplug anything. Still, if you going on the cheap, this may be the solution for you.

This is a really good headset
I've worn a lot of headsets and I'm quite impressed with this one.The Good:1) It's lightweight. You can easily wear it for extended periods without any noticeable fatigue.2) Even though the microphone may feel like it's too short it isn't. This is actually a good thing as it keeps it out of the way while you're working - I've had issues scratching an itch near my mouth and knocking the microphone out of the way with other headsets but not this one.The Bad:1) And really this isn't that bad. The ear cushion that it came with feels a little small on my ear. I'm a tall man so my ears are probably larger than average, so on most this probably feels right. That being said it isn't uncomfortable it just took an adjustment period of an hour or two.

Backup headset
I work from home using my VOIP phone for long periods of time supporting inventory systems for auto parts recyclers. I have a Plantronics T20rA phone and found there are few headsets designed with a RJ11 connector, most having a mini phone jack to plug directly into a computer. I needed a backup headset since I tend to run my cord over with my chair and have dropped my headset enough times that the boom cracked away from the earpiece mounting. While easily fixed with some super glue, I started to consider what if I did move damage to it where I could not repair it. Since I am happy enough with my original set, purchasing the same for backup made sense. Made by the same manufacturer as the phone, I knew it would plug right in and work without any tweaking. Though not cheap, they work for me.

Great buy for a receptionist!
I use this headset for my front office and I am up and down often from the desk so I am taking it off and putting it on many times a day. Sound is OK quality both hearing and microphone. People can hear me well but it tends to be a little difficult sometimes to understand people, they sound muffled. We record all of our inbound calls and I listen to them daily, sound quality is always better on the recorded call than I remember it beeing in my ear..I have been using it so far for a few weeks and im very happy with it.

Very Happy-A Great Phone/Headset All In One
Overall this is a great unit, I LOVE that it is an all in one phone/headset, no connections to worry about, just plug in your wall jack and go. The buttons are clear, large and work well and I have no issue with the cord length. I would have ranked five stars but the headset may be slightly flimsy but unless I'm careless should hold up well and I also wish I had more control over the ringer volume. As for other reviews that mention buzzing I have not experienced any. I am using this unit to work from home in a call center position and am very happy with this product and would suggest it to anyone needing a corded phone/headset.

It becomes annoying to have to do this
What a piece of junk. When I ordered a plantronics headset, I expected to get a quality piece of equipment, but I got the exact opposite.First, before I even put the headset on my head, I noticed that the microphone swivels WITH the speaker. This means that to adjust the mic to your mouth, you must also adjust the speaker on your ear. It becomes annoying to have to do this. You can't just adjust the mic like you can on most other headsets. Then I got it hooked up to the phone. First thing that happened is that literally nobody can hear me. I adjusted some settings on the phone and increased the mic volume, but it made no difference at all. There's two reasons for this. With the over-the-head option, the mic is like 15 miles from my mouth, and you can't bend the mic to get closer to your mouth. Even the cheapest of pieces of crap are capable of this. Second, even with the over-the-ear option, it's close to my mouth, but the pickup is still awful. Nobody can hear me until I put the microphone IN MY MOUTH. Once it's in my mouth, people can hear my damn stomach growling, but my voice still isn't as loud as it should be.Needless to say, I'll be returning this worthless headset. I have a $5 headset that I bought a couple months, but it creates a little bit of buzz to the person on the other end. However, even with that buzz, I can hear them clearly, and they can hear me crystal clear. I guess I'll go back to the cheap piece of crap, and steer clear of Plantronics products. What a joke.
