Before considering anything else, I go for quality construction and great design. This birdhouse offers both: a metal roof to shed water will help protect it from the elements of rain and snow - and the added guard around the hole will help protect nestlings from predators. It also has an excellent design for clean-out, where the entire face tips up so the box can be cleaned out. There is a small brass 'L'-screw that simply needs a 90-degree turn to open / reverse to protect.But I live in mountains in a very cold climate (where every winter guarantees temps at -30F or colder). A lot of things do not hold up well in our combination of cold winters and hot summer months; plus, here in the northeast, we expect feet of snow every winter and an inch or more of rain weekly the rest of the year. Naked wood does not hold up very long. I paint all my birdhouses with an exterior latex (water-based) paint. Not only does that add bright spots of cheer through the woods around home but it adds years to the life of my birdhouses. Start with great construction (solid wood, good build) and great design ... this one is excellent.

It is a wonderful addition to my backyard. It has quickly become my favorite Bluebird house. The tim roof is a great addition. Ensuring many years of use. The bird hole is also reinforced to prevent squirrels from chewing it out. To become a squirrels nest. Easy to clean out, with a swinging door. Great Value!

Really liked the birdhouse and I already have some wrens building a nest. However, I was disappointed to find out that the predator guard is also only wood, not metal. In the pictures is appears to be metal. How does this protect from predators that chew through wood?

Bought this for my husband for Father's Day to replace a bluebird house the squirrels have destroyed. He loves the tin roof and the easy clean access door. Perfect gift. I also bought predator guards on Amazon, a piece of metal with a hole in center to fit over the entrance hole and I attached it to this birdhouse. Really hoping the squirrels will give up chewing if they encounter a metal guard!

I bought two birdhouses as a gift for a friend who created an outdoor seating area near her home. I'm proud to give them as gifts as they are of quality construction and will last a number of years. They have the predator protection around the entry hole which is very important in our area to deter squirrels and as well as a metal roof. This is a very good product and worth every penny!
