If you like scary, intense movies without the blood and gore, this is your movie! Great acting and storyline with some topnotch actors! I have watched this movie several times with friends and always welcome introducing new people to this hidden gem. Well worth a watch with non stop action from about 15 minutes into it all of the way to he ending!!

Vacancy is a suspenseful horror film. From the beginning score during the credits it's like something from a Hitchcock film and like Hitchcock's psycho were back at a Motel on another suspenseful thrill ride. Instead of Norman Bates we get Mason a desk clerk played effectively by Frank Whaley, however during Psycho we as viewers find ourselves almost nervous for Norman as when the car stops sinking in the bog, there is no sympathy for this desk clerk, only anger and hatred.The plot is simple enough a couple with issues perhaps on there way to divorce car breaks down and they find themselves at the above mentioned motel. The couple is played by Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale who in my opinion have never been better, they are a relatable and believable couple and there is character development. They get there room from the awkward desk clerk and soon after that there is banging at the door and the phone rings but nobody is there. These subtle things are real, can happen and can be terrifying however the horror comes when Luke Wilson's character inserts the videotape in his room to find something shocking and disturbing.The Film is 80 minutes long and is filled with suspense, particularly the beginning when they are driving, every shot you feel like something is about to happen and you are on edge, it loses itself a bit towards the end but the 80mins does go by fast.As Laura Kern states in this months Film Comment Magazine "it's no Psycho - but what is? Still, with its perfectly eerie sets, stark lighting, inventive camerawork, and jarring frights, Vacancy comes closer than any other thriller in recent memory." Definitely a great watch. As someone who likes horror movies, It’s very thrilling to watch this story unfold. Definitely one of those movies that doesn’t get tossed around too much these days but I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good watch.

This is one of the few films of its kind that actually rises above the mere thriller genre into the realm of art. In large part this is due to the always fresh, always outstanding camerawork of Andrzej Sekula. Yet even aside from that brilliant photographer, the characters of this film break out of the typical "run and scream" modus operandi. The Luke Wilson character is one of the few (if not the only) of his type to actually DO SOMETHING to try and remedy a desperate situation. Usually in movies like this, opportunities for portrayals of profound courage are ignored in favor of some sort of spinelessness that I can hardly believe real men in real danger would ever resort to. Kate Beckinsale was, as usual, flawless. Apparently Sarah Jessica Parker was originally cast for this role, and I think that would have been a huge mistake. I imagine this may have been just one more "scream queen" role if Parker had been cast, while Beckinsale shows us a genuine portrayal of overwhelming fear.

Loved the thrills, a throwback to when many movies were actually enjoyable and weren't mass-produced by corner-cutting, badly-casting online streaming services.

how many times, hollywood?? when you advertise a flick like this based primarily on its shock value, you have to deliver some of the shock value you advertise! everybody knows the Saw movies started the recent influx and deluge of shock movies of this genre...but so many of the recent Saw rip-offs fail to even try to give up the torture and gruesome brutality that the original portrays so eloquently. this flick is such a blatant Hostel rip-off..all in the same vein as Saw...it advertises shock in the premise of a young couple getting caught in a hotel where people are making snuff films...you expect to see some of the snuff film stuff going on, and the movie just doesn't give it up! the couple sees a few momentary glimpses of a snuff film, then they spend the last hour and 15 minutes of the film trying to escape...with no torture, very little brutality...nothing but running away! kate beckinsale is a beautiful actress who does a good job at delivering the script she is given...luke wilson (who i most remember as his role as casey kelso in 'that 70s show') does a good job at giving us the role he is given...the couple is having problems, which is adequately portrayed in the opening 20 minutes of the flick...but ultimately, this is just a film about an innocent couple running away from a couple of jerks...with almost no shock value! luckily, this disc offers the extra feature of 10 minutes of the snuff film the couple was watching in their hotel room...a nice bonus feature on the dvd, but not enough to bump this dvd above the 3-star rating the flick deserves on its own merit...especially since the snuff film shots are seriously inadequate. if you like movies about innocent couples running away from jerks, you might rate this movie more highly than i did. there is some nice action and tension. like i said, it's not a bad action, drama flick...but i was looking for more. i wanted shock, torture and something that took me outside the box. this movie fails to deliver...it fails to deliver in a number of ways. sorry, but better luck next time.

Using both urban legends of Motel hidden cameras & Snuff films, this movie works perfectly; it is stable, coherent & easy to follow. You're definitely in for a good scare, from start till the end. This is one of those stellar gems when an actor or actress tries something that expands their range, and it pays off tremendously. Seeing the normally 'sweet/comedic' Luke Wilson playing a depressed and regretful divorcee on a reluctant journey with his soon to be ex before they wind up stranded in a cheap motel together is surprisingly believable and touching at the same time. But when the chills start, boy do they kick in like a hurricane. The tension builds just enough to have you straining not to shout at the TV, with grotbag decor, creepy staff and strange bangings enough to convince you they should never have checked in to begin with. It only gets more tense, twisted and sadistic from there, with the shocks wrung not from the modern over-reliance on gore (of which I must admit I'm also a fan) but on a finely tuned script and cunning action set pieces that leave you rooting frantically for the two sympathetic leads to get away. A fantastic film with excellent characters, filmed and acted immaculately. Rent this for a damned good (gore-light) night in!

If you’re a fan of classic motel movies such as Psycho” & “The Shining” (1980) then be sure to check out this killer of a thriller. “Vacancy” (2007) is one of the best modern motel movies I’ve seen in a long time. Not so much a horror but very much chills & thrills you to the bone. A great cast giving you tense & suspense from start to finish. I like movies with a small cast & one that is set in pretty much one place all at one time. It moves at a steady pace with a great start to finish. This is one to watch especially if you’re a fan of Luke Wilson and/or Kate Beckinsale.With an added bonus filled with Special features you can also watch Featurettes including Cast & Crew / Behind the Scenes etc. Check this one out but don’t forget to check in first! 100% great film!

Damit wird Amy und ihm klar, dass sie die nächsten Opfer werden sollen.●●●●●●●●●● MEINE MEINUNG ZUM FILM ●●●●●●●●●●Ich bin wahrlich kein Fan von Horrorthrillern und noch weniger von Splatter-Filmen. Den Film »Motel« hatte ich mir lediglich zugelegt, weil ich Kate Beckinsale gern sehe und die Beschreibung entsprechend positiv klang. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht!Gleich zu Beginn erinnert »Motel« an Werke des Suspense-Altmeisters Alfred Hitchcock, was auch so gewollt war. Parallelen zu dessen Klassiker Psycho [Blu-ray] sind beabsichtigt und zeigen sich unter anderembei der Deko der Motel-Rezeption mit den ausgestopften Tieren. Und auch vom Stimmungsaufbau her ist »Motel« glücklicherweise kein üblicher Horror-08/15-Streifen mit literweise Blut, sondern der Horror liegt eher in den Urängsten, die tief in uns stecken, und die in »Motel« gekonnt geweckt werden:• Die Angst, nachts in der Fremde zu stranden• Die Angst vor einsamen Gebäuden in der Einöde• Die Angst vor nächtlichen Geräuschen• Die Angst vor widerlichen Räumen und DingenDiese Punkte finden in »Motel« allesamt Anwendung und werden zudem durch den langsamen Spannungsaufbau in Richtung Höhepunkt getrieben. Obwohl der Film bloß 85 Minuten lang ist, geschieht in den ersten 20 Minuten praktisch kaum etwas. Man lernt zunächst David und Amy kennen, die sich auf dem Rückweg von Amys Mutter befinden, die noch nicht weiß, dass sich die beiden scheiden lassen wollen. Seit dem Unfalltod ihres gemeinsamen Sohnes herrscht eine frostige Stimmung zwischen dem Paar, was sich zunächst auch noch im Motel fortsetzt. Zumal Amy David vorwirft, die Interstate verlassen zu haben, weshalb sie in der Einöde gestrandet sind.Erst nachdem man sich in die beiden Protagonisten hineinversetzt hat, geht es urplötzlich zur Sache. Durch das extrem laute Poltern und Klopfen aus dem Nachbarzimmer wird man als Zuschauer förmlich geweckt – und dies stellt zugleich eine Art Weckruf für die Handlung dar, die ab diesem Moment stetig an Fahrt zulegt. Gekonnt spielt Regisseur Antal mit der Angst der Protagonisten und somit zugleich mit der Angst der Zuschauer … und kommt dabei ohne Gemetzel und Blut aus. Lediglich als die Handlung ihrem Höhepunkt zusteuert, fließt etwas Blut. Doch auch hier in Maßen und absolut zur Handlung passend.Heraus kommt ein Horrorthriller, der keinesfalls überzogen und abartig wirkt, sondern der in dieser Form sich tatsächlich ereignen könnte. Jeder weiß, dass es Psychopathen gibt; seien es nun Pädophile, die sich beim Anblick nackter Kinder befriedigen – oder eben jene, die beim Töten von Menschen ihre Befriedigung suchen; sei es nun aktiv als Täter oder passiv als Zuschauer.Die Idee ist Drehbuchautor Mark L. Smith gekommen, als er mit seiner Frau in Mexiko an solch einsamen Motels vorbeigefahren ist und sich gefragt hat, wie diese wohl ohne Kundschaft überleben könnten. Heraus kam dann »Motel«, das dem Zuschauer den perversen Nebenverdienst des Betreibers vor Augen führt. Und somit wären wir wieder bei der schrecklichen Realität des wirtschaftlichen Grundprinzips von Angebot und Nachfrage. Besteht eine Nachfrage nach einem bestimmten Produkt, so wird sich über kurz oder lang auch jemand finden, der diese Nachfrage befriedigen wird. Und somit wird dem Zuschauer direkt unsere langsam verrohende Gesellschaft vor Augen geführt. Immer mehr Horrorthriller werden immer brutaler und blutiger, und was vor zwanzig Jahren noch indiziert war, wird heute oftmals bereits mit FSK-16 auf den Markt gebracht.Die Idee der Snuff-Filme ist bereits Jahrzehnte alt, und diese gelten mitunter als moderne Sage. Jedoch gibt es inzwischen wohl Indizien, die darauf hindeuten, dass die Realität die einstige Sage überholt haben muss. Vor diesem Hintergrund muss man sich erst recht fragen, ob solche Menschenfallen nicht vielleicht schon bereits in irgendeiner Form existieren. Und eben diese Überlegung macht den Film in meinen Augen noch entsetzlicher.In einer anderen Hinsicht hat »Motel« ebenfalls mit Werken von Altmeister Hitchcock Ähnlichkeit. Der Film kommt mit sehr wenig Schauspielern aus und wirkt dabei beinah wie ein Kammerstück, bei dem sich die Primärhandlung auf das Motel reduziert. Wir haben zwei Opfer, drei Täter und einen Helfer in der Not; der Rest ist nicht zu sehen – außer auf Video.LUKE WILSON spielt David Fox, der ehrlich zu bedauern scheint, dass die Ehe mit seiner Frau vor dem Aus steht. Er spielt einen durchschnittlichen Ehemann ohne bekannte Erfahrungen im Nahkampf und ohne Superkräfte, der sich dem Horror im Motel zu stellen versucht. Eine durchaus überzeugende Darstellung – auch, was sein Verhältnis seiner Noch-Ehefrau gegenüber angeht. Er versucht weiterhin, es ihr irgendwie rechtzumachen, erhält dafür jedoch stets eine direkte oder indirekte Abfuhr. Der 1971 in Dallas geborene Schauspieler ist der Bruder von Andrew und Owen Wilson und war früher unter anderem in einer Folge von Akte X - Die komplette Serie [Blu-ray] zu sehen.KATE BECKINSALE spielt seine Ehefrau Amy Fox, die bei der anstehenden Scheidung die treibende Kraft zu sein scheint und auch zu Beginn des Films stets etwas an ihrem Mann auszusetzen weiß. Die 1973 in London geborene Schauspielerin hatte ich zuerst in Weil es Dich gibt gesehen, ehe sie mit der Underworld 1-5 (Limited Steelbook Edition) [Blu-ray] Reihe ihren Durchbruch hatte. Auch sehr empfehlenswert ist der Film Whiteout [Blu-ray]. In »Motel« überzeugt sie in ihrer Rolle als 08/15 Ehefrau, die von der aktuellen Situation und dem Motel nebst schmuddeligem Zimmer angenervt ist. Bis zum Schluss spielt sie ihre Rolle sehr glaubwürdig ohne Rambo-Allüren – eben als ein Mensch, den der erlebte Horror an die Grenzen des Möglichen treibt.Mir gefällt der Film »Motel« wirklich gut, und ich bin froh, ihn in meiner Filmsammlung zu wissen. Hier wurde sehr gut unter Beweis gestellt, dass ein Horrorfilm auch ohne Splatter und Schockszenen wie in Hostel [Blu-ray] und ähnlich gearteten Filmen auskommen kann. Eben mit der nötigen Spannung als Basis und dem Ausreizen der menschlichen Urängste als Hauptzutat.●●●●●●●●●● MEINE MEINUNG ZUR BLU-RAY ●●●●●●●●●●Die Blu-ray Disc steckt in einer normalen Amaray-Hülle mit Wendecover ohne FSK-Logo und zudem mit einem Mini-Booklet, dem man die einzelnen Kapitel sowie die Produktionsnotizen des Drehbuchautors entnehmen kann, was sehr aufschlussreich ist.Die Bild- und Tonqualität sind überzeugend, und auch die Navigation durch das Menü ist nicht weiter problematisch. Ungewöhnlich ist höchstens, dass man in einigen Untermenüs nach unten scrollen muss, da sich dort durchaus weitere Unterpunkte verborgen halten (siehe Fotos).●●●●●●●●●● MEIN FAZIT ●●●●●●●●●●Ein wirklich spannender Horrorthriller, der gut umgesetzt ist und ohne Splatter auskommt – dazu eine gute und überzeugende Blu-ray Disc, die sogar einige Extras bereithält. Mir hat beides gut gefallen und erhält daher auch gern gute 4 Sterne.

Un bon moment! Enfin un film de genre qui sait maintenir un certain suspens et qui ne confond pas émoglobine et qualité! Comme quoi, quand le scénario tiens debout et que les acteurs tiennent la route, pas besoin d'en rajouter des caisses et des kilos point de vue budget! Un vieux motel, un jeu juste et une mise en scène épurée suffisent emplement!
