Where would I put in the garage would be better for a bird deterrent

Inside garage!!?? I thought it is used outdoor! We place in deck in backyard by hanging on rack, it works esp when windy and sunny. Now we get a much cleaner deck as it used to be covered with bird droppings!

The pictures show them spaced close together. Can they be spaced farther apart? What is the recommended spacing?

You can space them out as you like. They are easy to assemble and seem to keep the birds away from the windows at the back of our house.

How can they be hung on the edge of a covered patio without damage to the roof?

First of all they don’t weigh more than an ounce or two. You could use those clips made for Christmas lights. Actually you could use duct tape.

If the nest is already there, will this prevent birds from returning?

I don't think so. I think my bird pooping problem was because there was a nest. They really didn't work at all. However, they are pretty in the tree until they corrode.
