Adequate
Stone arrived with a gouge in the center of the fine side but otherwise was fine. After use I find that the coarse side is quite good, removes metal well and leaves a fairly good surface. The fine side appears to have some coarser grits mixed in, adequate for general knife sharpening but not good enough for chisel of plane irons. I used water the first week and oil the next, both worked well, the stone absorbing 8 oz. Of oil to charge. After 2 weeks of regular use on various tools the coarse side is still flat but the fine side has developed appreciable dishing irregularly across the surface. Overall the stone is adequate for homeowner level needs but not useful for professional use.

Nothing wrong with the stone but the shipping was bad, they put the stone with other items but poor packing. stone arrived with chipped corners.

This is a big rock.
This is a large sharpening stone. Its size makes it easy to use. It has a soft coarse grit, made to take a lot of metal off, fast (about 320 and 600 grit). If you have a knife that you have never sharpened, this is the best stone to start on. This stone will form an edge. But if you already have a decent edge, and you have been keeping up with all of your knives and sharpening them when they need it; you will never need a stone like this. After you get an edge formed on a blade,1000 grit is a good next step.

Satisfying replacement for damaged item.
Although I was disappointed when I received the damaged initial sharpening stone, I received a replacement within a week and was very pleased. I recommend the New Star Foodservice for their attention to my concerns and would suggest a more buffered shipping technique for this heavy but fragile item should be considered.

You get what you pay for.
Inexpensive. The grits are as advertised. But it doesn't hold very well. So, you get what you pay for.

1 pc Combination Sharpening Stone Knife Sharpener 12x2-1/2x1-1/2"
This is a heavy stone and the knives do not move while sharpening. It sharpens ok , but you have to know how to hold at the right angle to get perfect edge . I watched some videos on U tube but find it is not that easy , maybe practice makes perfect ? I can't blame the stone .I bought it to sharpen garden tools also but I'm not sure how to do it. I shall try in spring. It did not come with any instructions or tips. It is a nice stone for someone who knows how to sharpen knives.

Sharpening stones don't travel well without protective packaging.
The sharpening stone arrived broken. They tend to be fragile, but had no protective packaging. So I ordered another one, and hope it survives the trip here.

Came broken but works good for getting a sharp starting edge.
Works great for getting a quick edge but wouldn't recommend it for finishing since it seems to fall apart and the grit messes up the edge while sharpening.I deducted a star since it was shipped in a padded envelope which means I ended up with one small stone and one large stone instead of one very large stone.
