The Amazing Jimmi Mayes: Sideman to the Stars (American Made Music Series)

I've read a lot of musician bios, and this was one of the best though I knew very little about the Jimmi Mayes. Great stories about behind the scenes of the Chicago blues legends like Little Walter other Chess artists. Probably the best account of what Hendrix was really like as a regular cat on the scene during his sideman days. Great context for stories from people who knew him later.

This book was a great read! It has all the twists and turns that you would expect from a page-turner. All the big name stars are mentioned like Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Patti Labelle, and a host of blues legends. Jimmi Mayes is in the mix in all the action.

Jimmi Mayes is a living legend. He one of the last of the original blues men. He also holds a place in the history of rock, funk, Motown, soul, and pop. This book brings back memories of the 1950s when blacks and whites were separate, the 1960s when integration became law, and rock and roll ruled. Mayes has a good memory of obscure events, and an intimate knowledge of the so-called music "stars" --especially Jimi Hendrix. The book is well written and makes excellent reading.
