Quintessential Work Boots meets the Epitome of Luxury
These Dr. Martens are the Cadillacs of workwear for your feet! The boots arrived the morning after I ordered them. Thank you Amazon workers! Upon opening the box, the room filled with a pleasant leather aroma as the boots came into view. I instantly strapped them on and proceeded with a bit of new-boot-goofin’ around the house. Convinced in a moment they were next to godly in appearance, fit, and feel (oxford comma: the only correct way to punctuate) I set about for the rest of the day doing chores as I periodically garnered an appreciative view of them laced to my trotters. I would exclaim it was like walking on a cloud of air, but I don’t want to sound too cliché. I’ll just say the experience transported me from my small Kansas farm to an endless, plushly carpeted paddock of northern England. As you can probably surmise, these are my first Dr. Martens. I’ll definitely be ordering more! As for those who claim these boots require a break-in period, don’t be a silly goose. The full grain Crazy Horse leather is thick, yet supple and compliant. My only complaint is that, likely due to the leather dying process, the boots were as dry as a popcorn fart and required nourishing with a concoction of waxes and oils I like to apply to all my leather goods as they dry out from continual use. But now all is well.

Go a size down for a glove-like fit.
I've had docs in black that I bought in my normal size 8. They were quite big. So when I wanted to try another pair, I got black patent in 7. They fit but they are a bit tight. I decided to try some brown boots. I ordered an 8, thinking about my patent leather pair that was tight. At the last minute, I also ordered a 7 to see if they might fit differently since they are a less stiff leather than patent. The 7 fit my regularly sized 8 foot like a glove! There is a breaking in period - the tops cut into my legs but I expect that will lessen after a bit. My left foot is slightly larger than my right, and the heel cup digs into the back of my ankle, but nothing drastic. This, too, I expect to go away in time. Overall, the brown leather is gorgeous and the boots fit amazing. There isn't as much arch support as I might like, as a former ballerina with super high arches. But I'm hoping the sole will mold to my foot shape as time goes on. If not, I can use some inserts, no biggie.

A little large, but excellent shoes
I had been warned that Dr. Marten's run a little large, so I ended up going to a local shoe store to try on a pair. They didn't have the style I wanted but I figured the size difference would be the same. As expected they were about half a size to a full size too large, but since I like putting insoles in my shoes, this actually worked to my favor and I ordered them as is. I found the dreaded "break in" period wasn't as bad because of the insoles and I am very happy with these shoes. As for the break-in period, I found that the worst of it was around the top part of the shoe. As you can see by the pictures, it doesn't have a pad there so it pretty much bruised my calf along the edge. I ended up lacing the shoes a little more than half way up to relieve the discomfort at the top. Once the shoes had broken in a bit, I laced them all the way up and found that if I kept it fairly tight at the top, it didn't hurt. So that was opposite of what I would have thought would happen. Once the shoe is broken in, it is great. I normally have a lot of foot pain (hence the insoles) and can only stand for a few hours but I was able to go to Huntington Library and walk through the gardens for about 4 hours without any foot pain. Plus I think they look cool- even on a 44 year old man.

Comfortable, even for retail
Easily the most comfortable shoes I've worn. I work retail, and broke these in right around Black Friday, so I was walking 10+ miles a day at work alone. I did put some arch support insoles in (I always do), but I'm astounded to find shoes that don't pinch or rub anywhere weird in the first week of wear. I used some old Kiwi mink oil to soften and waterproof them before the weather got bad, and now they're all-purpose for me - I can wear them out in the snow and for my full shift at work without having to change shoes or socks. The color is exactly what I wanted. I wear a lot of brown and earth tones, and have a vintage leather jacket that matches these almost perfectly. There's a bit of wear on the inside heel area that may get worse over time - it looks like a cloth lining inside is wearing off to expose bare leather. It's not a big deal, it's just kinda... pilling there. I have very narrow ankles but wide toes - the toebox fit perfectly, but the top laces look weird/don't sit well if I'm wearing thin socks. Obviously, not many people are going to try to wear thin socks with their Docs, and most people also don't have scuba-flipper feet with twig ankles either - just keep it in mind. I switched my lacing to corset-style (pull tight from the middle), which seems to help some of my weird foot and ankle things, as well as make them much faster to get on and off. Check it out if you're interested in an uncommon but useful way to lace your boots!

Wish they made half sizes
I've wanted these exact boots for years (Cherry Red Arcadia 1460s). I am a 9.5 in most shoes. I finally ordered a size 10 many months ago and they were too big. I sent them back. Eventually the 9 was in stock so I ordered those, and they were too small. They bit into the top of my foot (I have a high-ish arch) way too much. Docs do seem to be tight across the top of the foot where the laces are. A 9.5 would have been perfect, but as it was, I had to go with a 10. I've worn them at least 3-4 times a week for a month now, and they are definitely too big, but the 9 was just too small. It really sucks that Dr Martens don't make half sizes, especially considering how expensive they are, a better fit would be nice. I took off a star for that. When you already have big feet, it's disappointing to have to size up. I feel like they make my feet look HUGE and my feet definitely move around inside them even with thick socks. But I kept them, because 10 was my only option and I wanted these boots so bad. Ok now for the good stuff. Pretty much all my complaints relate to sizing. All that aside, they still look extremely cool and they are really comfortable and sturdy. They felt stiff at first but broke in quickly and easily. They look awesome with leggings, skinny jeans, long or short dresses, cut-off shorts with fishnets... I could go on. I always wanted these in the 90s when I was in high school but couldn't afford them, now I get to relive my grunge/goth youth. As for the color, the Cherry Red Arcadia leather is not the same as the Cherry Red in most other Dr Martens leathers. They look like a dark glossy oxblood with brighter cherry red "scuffing" and sort of berry-wine colored stitching. I haven't bought the leather protectant yet but I will soon. If you're on the fence, they are definitely gorgeous. If you are in between sizes and don't have a high arch you may be able to size down. I think a 9 would have fit me if it weren't for that.

Encantado
Perfecto.
