Medium tension and treats threads well when tying.

I love these bobbins. But they have 1 downfall, the glass in the tip will break if you drop it on something hard

These work well for me for both thread and wire. They do grip the spool a little tight, but I suspect they may loosen a bit. I bought 2 to try, and will update this review if anything changes.

For the record ---- the J. Stockard Soft Grip Bobbin Threader will not slide thru this bobbin!

this tool exceeded my expectations. for the price i wasn't expecting good quality, but this bobbin is pretty darn good. it has plenty of tension to hold/smoothly feed the spool and the joints on the neck are brazed and clamped together with a brass band. i don't know the first thing about fly fishing so i can't speak to it's performance with string but it does a great job with the 28g/32g kanthal wire i use to rebuild my e-cig heating coils. i might take up fly fishing just to collect the bizarre tools that go with it.Doc's Fly Box was a pleasure to do business with, shipped quick and was well packaged.Thanks Doc.
