This filter pad works exactly how you want it to — catches even the smallest debris and keeps my tank water looking spotless. I've been running fish tanks for years. And I admit, tanks are an expensive hobby. And because of that, I used to buy cheaper filter floss. I must've been feeling flush because I decided to give this a try. I never thought I'd feel this way about a filter floss. But it's incredible. It's not super thick, but it's capture rate is very high. I really love this stuff, and I'm so glad I have it a shot. I've used their 50 micron polishing pad for years, but I've since replaced it with a cut to fit furnace filter media that seems to capture a little better. For some reason, the 50 micron polishing pad isn't as effective as other 50 micron filter media I've used. But it's still a great pad and has it's place. But I've found a better way to polish a tank. I have an Amazonian tank that's heavily planted, which means I have a high dissolved organics problem (lots of driftwood, plants, and botanicals breaking down). Most of that stuff passes right through floss. And while this floss captures *so* much better than any others I've used, I also use a "cut to fit" air filter media from Merv that's intended for use in air filters and furnaces. I am also reviewing that media, and you can find it on my profile if you're interested. I place the Merv media between two pieces of this floss. The Merv media needs to be changed much more frequently, but captures much smaller particles that otherwise wouldn't be caught. It also can't be used alone because it's very thin and has no rigidity, so it needs to be placed thoughtfully. In my case, it works great between two pieces of this floss. I use this combo in both of my Amazon tanks and in my shrimp tank. It's a serious game changer. If I really need a polished look, or my organic load is really high, I'll use Acurel's clarifier (never in my shrimp tank). And if I'm worried about the levels of my good bacteria, I'll add good bacteria, and then a small dose of clarifier. This will not only polish the tank, but clump the bacteria with the clarifier, which makes it kinda sticky, and send it right to the filter where it's most useful. If you do this, make sure you turn off your UV sterilizer if you have one. Leave it off for a few days to let the bacteria establish itself. Most people don't realize the bacteria you add to tanks isn't active immediately. It's in a spore stage and it takes a few days for it to "wake up" and establish itself. This floss is a great general floss. It certainly polishes better than most. And their 50 micron pad is also great, but I wish the capture rate was higher. Next time I swap media, I might place the 50 micron polishing pad just before the furnace media, just to give it longevity (all sandwiched between this floss). In all, this is a great company producing a great product. And even though it seems expensive, it's much more effective.

I have used many other filter pads in my reef aquarium, and these are the best by far! I have used blue, green, and red filter pads they all worked about the same. When I bought these, I assumed it was just going to be the same thing as well. I mostly bought them because I figured it might be better to use a filter pad that did not have any color dye. Wow, was I mistaken, these pads are way better. There are two layers, and the layers are different, one side is made to catch larger particles, and the other one is made to captures finer particles. You want the tighter weaved section on the bottom if not it will clog quickly and defeat the purpose of the pads. The pads last longer, during the standard period which it would require me to replace the pad, these pads are not even halfway utilized. My unfiltered water comes in from one side on my Nano tank and then runs over the pads. So now instead of replacing the pad once a week, my process is replacing the pad, then next week rotate the pad and then the following week replace the filter pad. I could even go longer than a week between the process how when I replace the filter pad, there is still a large section in the center that is clean. I have been using the pads now for about a month, I could not imagine a month ago claiming that I suggested a filter pad for anyone in the aquarium hobby how I felt like they all worked the same, but these filter pads are great, and I would highly recommend them. While I gave the five starts for easy to clean, I do not clean these pads. They are cheap enough that I can toss them when they are done. I mostly gave them five stars on this one because I was just amazed at how good the pads work.

Filter material is of great quality, does an amazing job at polishing the water. The only issue I had with this is I added sections of this media to three different tanks and experienced about 20% die-off of livestock in all three tanks. Worth noting I did not remove my old cycled media, so not a removal of beneficial bacteria related issue. All parameters were in spec and media was washed before adding, so maybe there was something in the specific batch I received but unsure.

This polishing filter is well worth the money My aquarium is 6 weeks set up all water parameters are great 0 ammonia o nitrites And 5 parts per million nitrates the first thing I did was dose my aquarium with Acurel F which is a water clarifier then two days later I cut a piece of the floss to fit my my final out put basket on my fluval 207 canister filter and this is how my tank looks 5 days after acurel and the polishing pad Wow remarkable

This is a really great filter media. I use it in an above tank wet-dry filter for both mechanical and bio filtration. I only have to replace the top layer when it gets dirty, while the lower layers stay colonized with beneficial bacteria and free of debris. It has a good density and stiffness for a media. Filter floss that is too soft and fluffy becomes packed down as soon as water begins to flow through it, but this bonded media keeps it shape much better. This is especially important with a wet-dry filter where I want it to resist compressing, because the air space withing the media stack is needed to optimize oxygenation and elimination of ammonia. At the same time it is flexible enough to cut easily with ordinary scissors and bend to any shape needed. It also is perfect to disperse water flow through a filter so that channeling does not result in dead spaces in the media. One side of the media is slightly stiffer and more dense than the softer side. I have water flow into the soft side, and then the more dense side ensures that the flow spreads out and does not go straight through lower layers. Many DIY'ers suggest alternatives to traditional filter media such as plastic pot scrubbers or fluffy bath sponges. This is cheaper than those "cost saving alternatives", it works much better, and it is easy to cut and fit for any shape needed. For my filters, I make a "sandwich" of generic ceramic rings between two layers of this poly material, which I've found to be the best balance of effectiveness and affordability.

Updated review MAR 2019 - cut material and utilized on HOB filters, and have cleaned every 3 days for a month, A better media than disposable. Used in wet/dry sump, and just added to canister filter trays in conjunction with bio-sponges, will add rating and function review after a month of using in three Penn Plax canister filter trays, 700, 1000, & 1200 versus the disposable replacements. Updated review AUG 2018 - Had tested three other high quality filter media with different levels of micron, and this is the most versatile, since the media is about 3/4 inches thick and allows high flow with a high rate of filtration. because of the bonded dual "micron" filter media. Having utilized the single layer media, there is no comparison to the function of the layered. Very high quality material compared to the original provided with my wet/dry (fresh water) sump filter. It does appear this material can be rinsed and re-used, if customer wanted to do that to extend life and reduce waste. Easy to cut with a good pair of sharp scissors, for custom size. For optimum cleaning, use an outside water hose with a "nozzle." But then rinse in your water out of the aquarium to clean anything from the tap water. Previous purchase and review - Utilized in a salt water type, 75 gallon aquarium, for large Cichlids (fresh water), with a fine sand media. This is a first purchase of this product, and was concerned of receiving a inferior product at this price, but was pleasantly surprised with the superior quality of this product. This does well with cleaning and continued use, but can be disposable.

Used in my sump and over head filters, using a template it’s easy to cut to any shape desired. I have found they can be rinsed out a few times before you need to to replace (but this will depend on your particular setup) Great value.
