Fantastic, my dishwasher works again!
I have one of these old GE dishwashers in my apartment which uses this heating element, and it wasn't getting dishes clean...it wasn't drying them very well, either. Turns out that both of these symptoms can be due to the heating element getting less effective over time. The heating element is supposed to heat up the water during the main wash cycle, even on the models that don't include the "hot wash" feature. My heating element still worked...it was getting up to 250 F or so during the heated dry portion of the cycle... but that's not enough heat to wash the dishes well.I wasn't able to find this info online elsewhere, so hopefully this helps you. Here's what you can do to test your heating element:1. Take the temp of the water in the basin at the beginning of the main wash cycle after it fills with water ("short wash" on the dial). (Or if you have an IR temp gun, point the gun at the dishes on the bottom rack.) If it's much lower than 120 F, your problem is that your hot water coming into the dishwasher isn't hot enough.2. Take the temp again at the end of the main wash cycle, right before it drains and rinses. If it isn't at least 135 by this time, your heating element isn't heating up the dishes.3. Take the temp of the heating element during the heated dry phase. It should measure above 400 F.Replacing this part is a very easy repair...just two nuts and two wire connectors. However, the two nuts that hold this thing on are aged plastic, and very easy to crack by overtightening. You may want to order some replacement plastic nuts before you do the job. My dishwasher used plastic nuts with part number WD01X10070. Don't tighten them tightly at all, go slowly and spray water to check for leaks. Once they don't leak water anymore from above, they're tight enough.
