It obviously depends on the size and wejght of the window. But it is substantually made and solid product. It seems to me it would hold up a standard sash window.

Could this be used to prop up a dumpster lid?

If the lid weighs more than appr. 20 lbs. I wouldn't use it. I got one to prop the hood of my 1972 classic car, but the telescoping lock system fails, hood too heavy.
