The author brings out the nuances of the actress' life and loves with his artistic flourishes of language and imagery. This is perhaps the most empathetic telling of our Pakeezah's sorrows and 'pleasures'. It grips you from the first line and leads you to an epiphany on Meena Kumari 's lust for love at the end. The understanding of the author of his subject and his objectivity is remarkable. A must have for those who like reading biographies.

To capture the intriguing story of a legendary actress like Meena Kumari requires much more than persuasive writing skills (backed by a good research). It is apparent from the book that the author admired her in more ways than one. Of course, what is also visible is the non judgmental way he has presented the story including her vulnerabilities, oddities and failures in life. While she enjoyed fame and power in her professional life; her personal life was indeed mired in controversies and was a tragic one. Still in the end and despite all the pain she suffered; she remained this fascinating woman who had many admirers and lovers but none of them loved her enough to stand by her when she needed them (except one or two good friends and her sisters). She spent her entire life in search of this elusive love...but left the world disappointed and brokenhearted. My heartiest congratulations to the author for giving us this book on Meena Kumari.
