Perfection
I first read this book in the 1980s. It is a life-defining book that you have to go back to; I read it every five years. Of course it's about running and ambition and training and passion, and the historical context is fascinating. But it is way more. At the heart of the story is a dilemma of the human condition: would you ever want to achieve total perfection? Lovelock did (watch the race on u-tube). But what happens if you achieve the goal of your driving ambition? What do you do next? Better not to achieve?
