ah - takes me back
This was a fun book about Stitch Head, a long-forgotten creation of a mad scientist. Stitch Head stays around the castle to make sure his master's creations don't go wild in the nearby town and bring punishment down on his master. After years of working behind the scenes, Stitch Head is pushed into a situation where the "no visitors" rule is thrown to the wind.Stitch Head, for starters, is simply adorable. The illustrations in the book are perfect to set up the quirky atmosphere, and we have villains galore. This book reminds me so much of what I loved as a child: Odd monsters, freak shows, potions and creepy castles. Oh, and we have a monster called Creature, who has three arms. I freaking love it. This would be a great series for any boy to read. I think girls like me would really enjoy it as well - there is a girl who shows up near the end who is a butt-kicking type of gal. I have seen there are more books in the series, and I hope she is in them. I would love to read more of these to see what happens to Stitch Head next and to see if the fun continues.

Excellent Boy Book ... girls too
I purchased this book for my 9 year old son who hates to read. This book actually captured and held his attention from the beginning to the end of the book. He now wants me to purchase the other series. This book appears to be scary, but it isn’t so much; it’s actually a heartfelt story. It also had some humor throughout the book. I would recommend this book to any boy; I say boy because there aren’t a lot of books for boys to enjoy.

Cute and quirky
In an old castle named Grotteskew, just outside the quaint town of Grubbers Nubbin, the mad Doctor Erasmus brings to life freaky experiments, each one bigger and more sinister than the last. Stitch Head, the Doctor's very first creation waits in the shadows to give a special potion to the creatures once they awaken, so they don't run rampant and take over the town, harming innocent people. More than anything, Stitch Head wants the Doctor to remember him -- remember the friendship they once had before the Doctor went mad. When a freak show, full of fake freaks rolls into town, the show's owner, Fulbert Freakfinder, learns of the castle and the crazy experiments inside. He decides to take over the castle and kidnap the doctor so that he can make real monsters for the show. Now it's up to Stitch Head to stop him before it's too late for his old friend.A bulk of the novel takes place in Castle Grotteskew, a creepy, gothic castle atop a hill. The castle is filled with all sorts of imaginative, creepy crawly things that will delight young readers. The main focus of the story is Stitch Head. He's a small, sympathetic monster of sorts, more set on rekindling a friendship with the doctor than causing any sort of destruction. He patiently waits in the shadows to calm the newly born monsters, and until recently has gone unnoticed. The Doctor's latest creation is a hoot. He takes a liking to Stitch Head and is determined to make him his best friend. The Doctor and Fulbert Freakfinder are perfect villains that are just bumbling enough to bring a chuckle to readers. The writing is perfect for the age group and the tone of the story. It flows well, and within the pages is a wonderful message about individuality and friendship. Mr. Bass has a very vivid imagination and a definite way with words.Topping it all off are the black and white cartoon drawings that illustrate the book.A quick, fun and zany read, Stitch Head is a book I would highly recommend to young readers. It's well-suited for 8 to 10-year-olds, but even older kids and adults will enjoy it.

Cheerful and Oddly Touching
Stitch Head was mad scientist Erasmus' very first Frankenstein-style creation. He and the boy scientist promised to be friends forever. But Erasmus grew up, went on to create more and bigger and wilder creatures, and forgot about Stitch Head. Now, Stitch Head wanders the Castle, uses his own skills to turn Erasmus' terrible creatures into calm and mild monsters, and pines for the old days and his creator/friend. So, this is sort of like the thinking kid's monster story. There is a spooky castle, a mad scientist, terrifying (comical) creatures, conflict, drama, odd smells and threats galore. But, as a tale of lost friendships, new friendships, moving on from disappointment, becoming independent and rising to the occasion this book presents, subtly and lightly, many moments of real depth. It's not just farts and drooling monsters; it's not some heavy-handed message book; it's not cutesy; it's never tone-deaf - it's just cheerful, sad, entertaining, involving, and way better than it should be. And it is one of the few books for this age group, at least that I've read lately, in which the illustrations have their own independent charm and nicely complement the narrative. The result is that the whole enterprise is imbued with real cheer and good humor. And as an added bonus, the characters include a totally kick-butt heroine who arrives half way through, a sneaky villain, a charmingly inept and yet insightful creature sidekick, and some real dramatic suspense. There are also a bunch of sly jokes for the adult reader to help keep mom or dad entertained if they read this along with the kids. So, well worth a look as a slightly advanced chapter book type read. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to the author or the publisher of this book.

Pint-sized Frankenstein
It is a delightful "Frankenstein-like" themed story for kids. The children enjoyed the characters and created sound effects for the settings.

Stitch Head
Stitch Head is a new gothic children's novel similar in style to The Raven Mysteries and Undead Ed, and is the first book by Guy Bass that I've read. It's funny and kooky, while at the same time heartfelt without being mushy. It's also full of monsters, castles and mad scientists - what more could you want?!Stitch Head is about a tiny boy who was Professor Erasmus's first ever creation. Erasmus makes all kinds of monsters with multiple limbs or missing eyes, and he does all this within the walls of Castle Grotteskew in the town of Grubbers Nubbin (population: 665). Poor little Stitch Head has been forgotten by the professor, so spends all his time roaming the castle ensuring that no new monsters eat anyone. Nothing changes for him until Fulbert Freakfinder's Travelling Carnival of Unnatural Wonders arrives in town and offers to make him unforgettable. Things don't go quite to plan, though, and Stitch Head finds himself on a very big adventure for a boy his size!I loved this book right from page one. Stitch Head is a character right up my street: he's flawed, tiny and very, very brave. I felt really sorry for him and his loneliness within Castle Grotteskew, and I was glad when he made friends with a new creation called Creature. Over the course of this book, Stitch Head realises how important friendship is and how forty years of being a cobweb magnet doesn't mean he can't go out and almost-live. Aww!My favourite children's illustrator, Pete Williamson, is a huge part of this book, and he makes Stitch Head and the other characters and settings come alive. He's made Stitch Head look like a cute, tiny boy that gets clothing tips from Dennis the Menace, while Castle Grotteskew looks super gothic as it looms over the town. He and Guy Bass make a great team, so much so that I'm very much looking forward to the next Stitch Head book. This series is definitely one for fans of The Raven Mysteries and Scream Street - it's dark, monstrous fun!

A hilariously heart-warming, gothic tale of loyalty and loneliness.
Stitch Head was the first almost-alive creation of mad professor, Erasmus. Long forgotten by the professor, he has never given up on the promise he made to always be best friends. As the experimental creations get ever more dangerous, Stitch Head keeps his promise to always look out for his master, and spends his days ensuring the almost-alive creatures Professor Erasmus creates don't escape and cause havoc in Grubbers Nubbin. However, with the arrival of Fulbert Freakfinder’s Travelling Carnival of Unnatural Wonders, Stitch Head is promised a new life where he will never be forgotten again…A hilariously heart-warming, gothic tale of loyalty and loneliness, with hideous monsters, dastardly villains, a very angry girl and one of the most endearing characters I’ve ever come across. Once read, Stitch Head will definitely not be forgotten. Thank goodness then, that there are five more to enjoy.Pete Williamson’s illustrations capture the tone of the story and the characters’ feelings perfectly, bringing the inhabitants of Castle Grotteskew to almost-life.Great for fans of Gustav Gloom and Goosebumps.

I read this book to my year 4 class and they loved it. It was a laugh a minute and emotionally rollercoaster for little Stitch Head. I can't wait to share the other books with my class, when we are back to school!
