Beautiful prose and illustrations make tough subject matter relatable
I bought this beautiful book during a cultural history unit I did with my third grade students and they really loved it. The story deals with some tough subject matter in a way that is deeply personal and relatable to help children understand life inside a Japanese internment camp. The story talks about a young girl, Mari, whose family is moved to a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Mari struggles to find beautiful things to draw during her art class because she is surrounded by so much ugliness in the camp. However, the art class ultimately proves to be a beacon of hope for Mari as she begins to encounter kindness and seek out beauty as she copes with the loneliness of her family's move.I love that the story is written in both English and Japanese, adding another cultural dimension to the experience of reading it. Amy Lee-Tai's story is simple and hopeful and Felicia Hoshino's illustrations are absolutely stunning. This is great children's book about a time in history that is not often tackled in books for young audiences.

Wonderful book!
I loved this book. The pictures were beautiful and they really portrayed how life was for a little girl in the Japanese internment camps. I loved the Japanese writing underneath all of the English text, a nice touch. I used this for a school project (multicultural lesson plan) and it went over really well. I plan on using this book in my classroom when I become a teacher!

It tells the story as it was.
I bought this book for my 99 year-old Japanese-American friend who together with her husband, mother-in-law and three children was sent to an internment camp. She gave birth to two more children while in the camp. We read the book in English and in Japanese.
