English instructions, but still need a little more information
I bought this for my 12 year old son who is a chess fanatic and wanted to learn this game. There are English instructions, but he had to do some online research to set up the board properly. Each piece has a Japanese character on it and no other distinguishing marks. So if you don’t speak Japanese it’s an obstacle. But he was able to figure it out. He said he’d rate it 4 and 1/2 stars.

Better than nothing, but the ink wears off
The media could not be loaded. I bought this because I figured it was better than nothing when I bought it. I got exactly what I expected. When playing Shogi, part of the experience is that you strike the pieces when you set them down. The *clacks* that you get from the board when striking the pieces is fairly decent, though the pieces sound best on a hard wood table—I surmise that because the board is hollow, it doesn't produce very good sounds. Now, why is this relevant? well, after just 10 or 15 times of picking up and striking a piece, it has begun to wear the ink off this piece. But, the pieces are so small, you cannot properly pick them up and strike them anyway. Your best bet (as will also make the pieces last longer) is simply just to slide the pieces carefully. Now, as for the magnets. The magnets suck. While you won't have a piece fall off the board just moving it, they are weak and do not keep the pieces from sliding very well.
