This is a great resource book
This is a great resource book, I just got it and can see that O 'Reilly has brought the worlds best innovators and their ideas that sparked industry, and a technological revolution and put all theses resources and their output all together and placed them within reach of my inquisitive and creative finger tips. This fifth edition of Running Linux with these 28 Chapters I'm using for Education, Information and/or my Entertainment business purposes; covering subjects on installing and maintaining and learning to use all my Linux Systems. This are just few study steps I take to acquire more a sense of self-empowerment and assist with keeping up with the world of changing computers. My projects include:* Linux system recovery - Learning how to manipulate the Linux Boot process and recover file system failures.* Linux Kernel Compilation and Linux Start-up* Customizing my Linux system start-up - system memory, processes, tasks, modules and disks* The SmartCloud and Smarter Infrastructures* as well as assist me with learning more about our social, environmental and economic goals. ~ Samuel F. Excellent
I was in a urgent need of some fairly serious Linux bootcamp. This book worked, and this is how:I hadn't had any significant Linux experience prior to buying this book. Sure, I knew a few basic UNIX commands, who doesn't?After installing Ubuntu it became clear that I simply will have to spend too much time googling solutions for every problem. I went ahead and bought this book, read it cover to cover in about two days, and my fluentness in Linux administration/programming has increased dramatically. I still have to google some specifics (like Postfix/MySQL integration issues), but most of what I needed for my work, was in this fairly thin book.Note that it is not focused on any particular distribution, and most of the tasks are explained with several major distros in mind. I kind of appreciated that also, since it only reassured my decision to go with a Debian-based Ubuntu.

Failed to answer a simple question
I haven't used Unix/Linux for about ten years. I know there is a command that will tell me how full the disk drives are. I tried to find the answer in this book. I looked up every possibility I could think of in the index (no entries for disk, or drive by the way--you need to look for "hard drive"), and waded through the section of filesystems with no luck. When I found elsewhere that I was looking for the DU command. I looked that up. It's in the book but as a digression in a section explaining redirection on the command line. The related DF command is not mentioned at all, at least in the index. These are basic commands that should be well referenced.

Great Book
I bought this book for a programing class, because we used linux in the class, and I had very little experience with it. I'm very glad I did, because this book is a great introduction to all the things you need to be productive on a linux system. I enjoyed it so much, I'm thinking about installing linux on one of my home computers.

Great information including general subjects such as networking
Great information including general subjects such as networking. Some is of course now dated, but I would rather regard that as "historical"

So far, so good...
BEWARE: Many of these customer reviews are dated. For example, the best and worst cited by Amazon are from 1999 and 2001, respectively. This is the 5th edition, published in late 2005/early 2006. FYI...I gave it four stars simply because what I did read was very helpful, but I have much more to go. I may give it five later.

THe best Linux Book on the Market
This is hands-down, the best Linux book on the Market today...It navigates you easily through an ocean of knowledge when dealing with this operating system. One can quite literally begin at page one and read through the final chapter and have an expert view of Linux Operating Sytems. Highest recommendations.
