works fine for cordless and low price
I've had this set for about 18 months now and just recently started having trouble with the mouse. It had been working on my light colored painted desk top without any trouble. Just in the past couple of weeks it has started to lag if not stop moving the pointer all together. Changes of batteries, resynching, moving receiver and any other fix possible were tried. The only thing that helped was using the mouse on a dark smooth somewhat shiny surface. Then the pointer would start to jitter with or without any actual movement. I called Microsoft's hardware support line 800-360-7561 and they are sending a replacement mouse without any questions, hassle or hesitation. I didn't even have to go through all the typical support questions. They just asked for my product ID # and shipping address. The warranty is good for 3 years. Other than this new problem, both the keyboard and mouse have been great. Not having to deal with the cords has been wonderful and we've been able to use both the keyboard and mouse from the couch when watching a movie on the computer monitor. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a wireless setup.

Not good for work use
I bought this keyboard for work, we do lots of typing I have notice I make lots of spelling errors the keyboard doesn't pick up some of the keys I press so I dont recommend this keyboard for work use this would be a good keyboard for home use.

Very functional, solid build quality
This keyboard and mouse work pretty well overall. They don't feel too cheaply made, and I'm not worried about them breaking. However, they go through batteries pretty quickly. In fact, once the batteries start to get drained they won't work very well, so you can mash a key several times before anything happens. The USB receiver is also pretty large, so it's definitely designed for desktop systems. If I could go back and do it again, I would probably get a different set, but these aren't too bad.

Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 700 Needs Work.
I had a Dell wireless keyboard/mouse system which I loved and used for years. As a matter of fact, I have 5 more of them in my office, all working well after a large amount of usage. My home one finally went south and I had to replace it. I bought an (expensive) Logitech system which worked very well and seemed to be a fine replacement, until I realized that it was eating batteries like they were M&Ms. So I looked for something more battery-friendly and settled upon the Microsoft system.By the way, let me mention that I had size and shape requirements too so not all possible systems were available to me. For example, I don't like those "wave" shaped keyboards.Anyway, the MS system arrived and I opened it excitedly, thinking about how much money I was going to save in a year in just batteries alone. The first thing I noticed was that the build quality was far inferior. Now I'm not a fussy person about stuff like this, so for me to notice that right off the bat really means something. The way the battery compartment of the mouse worked, for example, was disconcerting to say the least.Anyway, I set it up (no problems) and began to use it. I quickly noticed that not all of the letters I typed on the keyboard actually made an appearance on my screen. I decided I just needed to type more firmly and tried to accept that doing so was a minor adaptation to make if the thing works. But, alas, that did not help the situation. Letters were missed regularly, and sometimes in embarrassing places. I found myself re-reading everything I typed for editing purposes, and even when I focused on correcting the missed letters, I couldn't get them to type out. I even tried installing an updated driver to no avail. Now maybe I just got a bad keyboard, but that is the one this review is based on, and you'll have to decide for yourself. The mouse, by the way, worked satisfactorily.I went back to the battery-chomping Logitech, discovered that the mouse actually has an on/off switch on the bottom, use that switch when I leave the computer unattended, and so far, the battery issue is less apparent. And no missed letters. My review conclusion? Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Plug and Play in Windows 7
I barely gave it time to warm up from the freezing mailbox. I put fresh batteries in. I plugged into my Windows 7 (x64) Desktop. WOW! All the buttons work! (Top row on Keyboard.) For those complaining of intermittancy (buttons don't always register) may I recommend a simple solution...Put In Fresh Batteries! You do realize that rechargables (Ni Cads, NiMH, etc) only put out 1.2 volts (1.37+ when overcharged.) Those cheap Carbon Zinc batteries at Dollar Tree start over 1.5 volts (8 for a Dollar!) Alkalines also begin life over 1.5 volts and ARE rechargable, with the proper equipment. In an emergency (you don't have time to change the batteries,) keep your other keyboard, mouse plugged in! That way you can continue working...up to the limits of the cord. USB (and USB2) allow up to 127 devices simultaneously! You can also have PS/2 (round connector) keyboards and mice hooked up...even an old serial mouse! I LOVE 'EM!

Very Fine Wireless Keyboard
The Style and construction of this Keyboard are Very Good. Takes a Little getting used to from a Mac Keyboard. It does have a Few Quarks. Not bad once you figure out what to do to Fix it.

GOOD PRICE AND QUALITY
I set the mouse and keyboard up in about 2 minutes and have had zero problems with it in the month I have been using it. I use it daily for hours at a time.
