The 10th Kingdom

Buy it now!
I am a 69-year-old retired IT Director. I’ve been watching video since the VHS rental days forty years ago. I have a couple of dozen laserdiscs, and my laserdisc player still works perfectly. I also own around 500 VHS tapes, 350 DVDs, and a few dozen Blu-Rays, so I’ve watched how movie quality has improved over the years. As far as The 10th Kingdom is concerned, it’s one of my favorite movies, and I’ve seen it a half dozen or more times. After reading a couple of the reviews, I wasn’t expecting much since other customers didn’t seem too thrilled with the picture or sound quality. I bought this Blu-Ray and saved it for my birthday, which I usually celebrate by settling in to watch one of my favorite movies. Wow! Even before the movie started, I could tell by the FBI warning that the video quality was superb. There was clear definition and the colors were vibrant. I noticed details I never saw before. It was like seeing it for the first time! I have tinnitus (ear-ringing) on a daily basis. So, I was thrilled when I discovered that the Blu-Ray had subtitles. I mean, I wanted to have the movie so bought the DVD a few years ago and had to live with no subtitles, but the Blu-Ray has subtitles! Also, they are very clear. Sometimes the font used for subtitles isn’t clear or the letters are too big. These were clear, the right size and easy to read. Lastly, if you are a musician or interested in movie scores and soundtracks, the Blu-Ray has a feature called Isolated Movie Score, in which you can play the entire movie and hear just the movie soundtrack and incidental music. Yes, I know, you’re probably not going to want to listen to 7-½ hours of background music, but if you’re working around the house and usually listen to music while you’re doing chores, this is a great feature. Just keep in mind that this is 7-½ hours long so save it either for a marathon weekend or over a couple of nights. Bottom line: great picture quality, great sound, subtitles, isolated music…. if you like this movie, definitely add this to your collection. If you’ve never seen this movie and like fantasy plots, you should add this movie to your collection as well! On a scale of 10, I give it a 13!

Don't expect the Digital Copy.
This movie is perfect in every way. Already own it, but was just upgrading to Blu ray and was very disappointed the digital copy was useless.

A unique spin on some fairy tale classics
I watched this with my family when it initial came out on NBC. Years later I was talking to my husband about it and found out he had not seen it, so...off to Amazon I went to find it, because of course Amazon has EVERYTHING. I love this series. It takes childhood fairy tales, puts them into modern day perspective, and adds a little twist. I will say that while overall the theme is pretty innocent there are certainly pieces of this series that should be known about before airing to children. Not because they're bad, per se...but because as a parent you should be aware of what may be getting ready to influence your kids. There are a family of trolls in this show who, aside from looking ugly, don't look scary. However, their favorite phrase is "Suck an elf." Not cursing by any means but...if your kid has a habit of picking up on things that are said repeatedly (as this term is)... make sure you're aware that it's in there. I remember being younger when I watched it and my parents making it known they weren't real keen on that phrase. The second thing is that there are 2 times (that I can remember right off hand) that characters in the movie go to the evil queens grave. It's not bloody or murderous or anything of that nature, but it has a certain creep out factor (as they show the evil queen who is portrayed to have been dead for many years) and she's a little creepy. Mind you I was also the kid who had nightmares over ET. She's pretty much bones, there might be a very thin layer of skin over her, and I believe she's in a gown so it's not a full skeleton. But...if you have a kid that freaks out and gets nightmares easily be it because of their age or their personality, you may want to be aware of where those parts are if you're going to let them watch the series with you. Those 2 pieces aside, the rest is pretty harmless and all in good fun. It's not animated (at least until the characters travel to kissing town) so it probably won't hold the audience of a really young child. I think I was about 12 or so maybe when this was on NBC and I enjoyed it then...

The Blu Ray is nothng special, upscaled from video mostly
This is not a review for the actual series but for the Blu Ray. In summary - if you have the DVDs then do not bother, the Blu Ray release is NOT an upgrade.Setting aside the title animation which was clearly created for SD video broadcast, the actual footage is very clearly not from a genuinje HD source. Sadly the other normal benefit of an HD release for older video sourced content, a better and more virbrant colour palette (wider gamut), is also lacking. It's upscaled well, but you still can't get back the level of detail that isn't there in the original material. Things to look out for, if you are curious and picky, are facial hair and skin countours which are all qute flat and lacking and detail. You can't quite read small text even when it should be in the focal plane and so on. Some scenes even looked worse and seem to have been "recovered" from a secondary source.

Fantastic Series
I watched this when it first aired in 2000 and was so enchanted by it. It's magical, a bit cheesy and full of whimsy that people of all ages can enjoy. The acting is fantastic - the main cast are supported by a superb ensemble cast and the running theme of fairy tales is so fun.The DVDs themselves are excellent quality. They come with Dutch subtitles but these can be turned off in the main menu.

A Brilliant Fantasy Series For All Ages.
Fantastic, just as good as I remember when I watched it when first broadcast. A wonderful fantasy series in the same vein as Once Upon A Time with a brilliant Ango - American cast (maybe a few Canadians as well?). Each episode is approximately 90 mins. long so plan to watch it over a few nights. A superb mix of drama, comedy and adventure. Looks and sounds great in HD. Well worth getting a multiregional Blu-ray player to watch (Region A version bought).Highly recommended>

Fantastic series but Dutch release has DVD authoring problems!
Finally! I was able to pick up this fantastic series at a reasonable price but there are problems that other fans should be aware of.The Dutch release comes in a nice Digipak (gatefold cardboard) with three discs with very similar artwork. Discs one and two have about 2 hours and 45 minutes of the show with disc three having about an hour and a half (along with a 45 minute 'making of'), the video (which is in PAL) and audio (2.0) are very pleasant, the DVD looks great upscaled on a larger TV too.The series is treated as one long feature film, disc one has the fantastic opening titles but no credits, disc two doesn't have any titles or credits and disc three has just the end credits. There are chapter marks and the screen does go blank where the original broadcast would have had commercial breaks but a lot of TV shows on DVD have these pauses. The menus themselves are quite crude and not as sophisticated as other DVD's but they serve their purpose. The main problem and it's a big one is there are authoring errors on the discs. Disc one has one about 22 minutes in, the image stops for a few seconds then jumps ahead. Now depending on your player you may be able to play through this without the disc crashing or locking up your player. If you can't I'd recommend pausing the disc at 22 minutes and using your players GOTO function to jump ahead to 00:22:11 this should go passed the error. It is annoying but it's the only fault during the show itself. Disc two is error free as far as I can tell but disc three has another error but not during the show itself so it's possible it's during the 'making of'.Other customers have mentioned the subtitles, unfortunately there are no English subtitles just Dutch ones and they are automatic, they cannot be turned off before the show starts (unless I missed a menu!) but they can be turned off during the show with your remote, just press the SUBTITLE button to remove them. It's quite simple. The show itself is still fantastic with great characters, lots of silly humour and some of the best scenery in TV history. If the show ever makes it to Blu-ray it will be a treat for the eyeballs! If you know anyone who loves Once Upon A Time or Mirror, Mirror and have never seen or heard of The 10th Kingdom then they will love this show (and you) Happily Ever After!

“Give me a never ending supply of beer!” [Tony]
Although the discs are in Dutch, the episodes are in full English soundtrack, you just need to turn off the subtitles, go to ondertiteling and select the ait option, there done. This 2000 fantasy comedy begins when spoilt Prince Wendell is transformed into a dog following a breakout at the Snow White memorial Prison in the fourth kingdom and he leaps through a magical mirror, colliding with Virginia in our world, closely pursued by Trolls and a half wolf. But returning home she soon realises she is in danger and flees with Wendell back through the portal, but will she be any safer there and can she break Wendells curse? This 3 disc set is full of wry humour from the start, being frivolous and poking fun at many well known fairy tales. The special effects are still impressive and the worlds credible. Best acting must go to the Wolf [Scott Cohen] and the dog, no, it really is a dog!Originally filmed as 10 one hour episodes, this plays in three continuous parts, without breaks or credits. All the discs load to a main menu featuring play, scene selection, and subtitles [on/off] . Disc 1 also has special features [making of, cast and crew, characters and search for 10th kingdom] while disc 3 has a making of .This is a 12 rating as much of the humour is risqué and adult by inuendo and some of the ‘catchphrases’ could prove embarrassing if picked up by youngsters, but the swearing is generally light and infrequent. While there is no extreme violence, there are scenes ‘after-the-fact’ which some younger viewers may find distressing and the final part is quite dark and intimidating. Just be careful what you wish for.
