I use a small square of old tee shirt gathered around several cotton balls and tied with a twist tie. Wear a nitrile glove and hold the "daubber" in your had, dip it into a small qty. of the poly and proceed to wipe the surface. Watch the reflection on the surface as you apply the poly to ensure complete coverage. Allow to dry. Lightly sand with 320 grit and reapply. Repeat until you have the desired result. **Q: What is the difference between the satin and the gloss and which is better for redoing a farmhouse dining set that will be stained a dark walnut?** A: The gloss is almost always gonna give you a thicker coat. That means more protection for the wood. HOWEVER, I believe the satin finish is much “richer” .... and not as FLASHY as the gloss. With your dark walnut, I think it deserves the satin treatment.... but it’s easy to recommend ANYTHING when IT’S NOT MY TABLE!!!
