Very flimsy. Needs to be stiffer to keep books open.
I found this BookBone (in my video I kept calling it dogbone) to have great potential in keeping books open. For thinner paperbacks, it seems to do the trick. It is heavy enough to keep thin paperbacks open. However, for more stubborn books it is not heavy enough nor was it stiff enough. It is essentially two weights connected by a flimsy rubber sleeve. The flimsy rubber sleeve is the weakness of the design. If the sleeve was made of a stiffer back it would prevent the weights from being overpowered by the bookbinding. The strength of the book weight is the rubber material to grip the book. See my video to show the weakness of the Bookbone.Given this weakness, I cannot recommend this product for the use cases stated. I will probably return this for a better book weight.

bad smell, couldn't use it
I received my book bone and was looking forward to using it. But it had a terrible chemical smell and I could not stand to read with the bone inches below my nose! I tried cleaning it, no change. Eventually I did get a refund but I'm disappointed that the product didn't work.Update 4/7/19 the seller says the smell will eventually go away. If it does I will update my review.

Wish I'd known about these sooner!
I read all the reviews before ordering the book bone, because I had never heard of a rubber one. I was looking for a leather one. But, I have learned to read reviews, and notice the 'what others have bought' section. This blue rubber book bone is really cool! If you put your nose right on it, you can smell the rubber. But, even first out of the box, I didn't notice the odor. And my hands don't smell of it after using it to hold the pages open.I tried it on a small paperback, and it did work, but, really, the pages get turned so fast reading one of them, it's unnecessary. Best in a larger, either paperback or hardbound book.Turning the pages with it is also very cool. It's not distracting to move it around the pages as I read, and it's great they send a diagram of places to put it on the book as you read, especially since I was a book bone novice.Love it!

Great for a reader
This is one of those items when you start using it you wonder how you ever got along without it. When one reads there are times one wants the book to stay open and there are times when one needs to sit a book down and by turning it pages down it damages the spine. Using this prevents that.I've had one for years and my nine year old grandson is a avid reader and I thought it would be useful for him. When he got it he was confused because he never saw one before but after reading the directions and understanding what it was, he could not get upstairs to his books quick enough to try it.Definitely worth the money. Great gift for a reader who most likely would never think of it themselves.

Fantastic Reading Device!
What a fantastic little device! This book bone is perfect for keeping pages in place and the book open to your reading location. I have used it on both hardback and paperback books and it works on both, however the book binding has to be limber enough for the book to lay open. For most books this is not a problem, however I just so happen to have a new book (it's a hardback with a lot pages) with a binding is so tight that it's hard to open the book and lay it on a flat surface. So it just folds up on this little book bone. However that is not a problem with the book bone, it's a problem with the book. It's hard to keep open with your hands. Anyway I just wanted you to be forewarned that if the book lays open by itself or reasonably open then you couldn't ask for anything better than this book bone. Its rubber surface grabs the pages and hangs on tight unless the book is tilted up more than about 45°.
