I am a metal detectorist myself and I have to say this is a very well-thought-out product. It comes in 2 parts which assemble with a simple spring clip. The build feels strong and sturdy which is exactly what you want for children. The coil and visual display unit fold in to make it small enough to fit in a backpack, making it perfect for a day trip to the beach. There are no wires to deal with, it's all well concealed inside the stem.It has the capability of more grown-up detectors, yet it's been simplified enough for children to understand. It has colour-coded discrimination to make it easy to distinguish between potentially good targets and bad ones, and it seems to detect coins really well up to a depth of about 6 inches, which is AMAZING! There's a pinpoint function too, which helps to locate the exact position of the target. Functionality wise, this is a way better kids detector that most of the others on the market, in my opinion.The only fault I can find is that it's designed for single-handed use but most children would probably prefer to use 2 hands (hockey stick style). That said, it can easily be used with one hand on the handle and a second hand further down the stem so it's not really an issue.The bottom line is, I absolutely love this detector as it's perfect for my kids and well worth the money. You should buy it!

Brought this as a present for my son, he wanted a detected for the beach. Performance wise its a little sketchy, accuracy is pretty good but not sure just yet as we used it in our front garden and I think it may have been picking up water pipes under the grass, so the money we hid in the garden took a bit longer to find 😄. It's very easy to put together, it looks the part and neat for a child. It's very lightweight. Good value to keep my son entertained 😊

I purchased this for my 8 yr old son , after the disappointment of a different branded one at Christmas which was useless. Read the reviews on this one and believe them it amazing , He was really excited when it arrived and couldn't wait to get it out the box , 5 minutes and he was up and running and tried it out in the garden as I didn't really want my lawn dug up , we later took it to the beach and with in 5 minutes were £1.60 in profit and one amazed happy lad . we also found several bottle caps and tent pegs and a spoon some of which were buried quite deep in the sand , once it detects a metal the 3 different Coloured led lights let you know what you found , then press one button and it will pin point your find to the exact spot , the wire runs inside the tubing so it cant be damaged and the coil is waterproof and also comes with a 9 volt battery clear instructions and set of pirate stickers for younger ones.Yes its on the pricey side for a child but I think it well worth the money and hours of fun and entertainment.

This is our third detector having already tried the Maplin Treasure Seaker and a Viking V5. It's fair to say the DR.ÖTEK MT9s detector beats them hands down.Setting the detector up for first use takes mere seconds with the included 9V battery. Make sure you have a posi screwdriver handy for the battery compartment. Once the battery is in it's just a case of turning it on and away you go. There's no manual tuning to do, it's all automatic.We were gobsmacked at the amount of targets this thing found in our back garden. Fortunately I have a small patch of ground that I didn't mind the kids digging up so I let my 6 year old daughter loose on it to give this detector a proper test.Three hours later, she's got over 20 finds. She wasn't even bothered they were all rusty bolts and screws. There's always the possibility of finding treasure!The feature that make's this detector a winner for the kids is the different sounds and lights it puts out depending on what metal you're swinging over. If you've found some old iron junk it will flash red with a low tone. Find some nickel, have a green light and a higher pitch tone. Silver? Blue light and an even higher pitch tone. This is a concept kids will grasp quickly and takes the frustration out of digging up junk (unless they're anything like my daughter!)One thing that may catch you out is the inductive switches/buttons on the control unit. The Disc/PP button on our unit has a sweet spot that's slightly below the printed graphic. Make sure you show your kids exactly where to touch on the unit otherwise this could be a problem.I'll revisit this review to comment on durability. I have no concerns though. There's a 2 year warranty that takes a couple of minutes to set up on their website.I have absolutely no regrets choosing this detector for my kids and am considering buying one of the bigger models for myself once I bag a few land permissions!

Lovely piece of kit...poor performance

Was bought as a small light weight travel metal detector and is actually really good for that purpose. It’s described as a kids metal detector but can easily be used as a travel light weight detector. Good for the price and works very well.

I bought one of these for each of my children as they are very into finding 'treasure'. They have just turned 5 and I do think that this is still a bit heavy and big for them to hold and move around properly, but with a bit of help from Mum and Dad they have been great. It is very simple to operate, with an on switch, and then a pinpoint button for when you know you've found something.We have taken it out a few times and had a mixture of success. We have yet to find anything very small with it, but it has found various medium metal objects including an old railways pin.It has provided a lot of fun and I think when the kids are a bit older and have a little more patience it will be even better.
