It just means that these guys have a wire coming from the breaker box like everything else that has power in the house
We recently did some remodel on our family room and our contractor told us we should replace some old smoke detectors. They were about 20 years old but I had no idea that would need to be done. He told us that they should be replaced every 10 years and it would be a snap to change them. Our smoke detectors are hard wired with battery back-up. It just means that these guys have a wire coming from the breaker box like everything else that has power in the house. He let me know that all the smoke detectors were on the same circuit (it's code) so when you kill the power for one you killed them all. I did the job myself (no need to call an electrician) and they went up in a snap like he said. These smoke detectors were easy to install and work great. If you to change yours, these are the ones... Remember... White wire to white, Black wire to black and Red wire to what ever wire is left over. (it could be any color) Not rocket surgery...

Good value
I bought the 4-pack with no "Expert Installation." These were compatible replacements for my home's "contractor" alarms. I already replaced three, circa 2001 alarms, so I bought the 4-pack to have spares on-hand without worrying about finding future compatible replacements.I removed the batteries from the three I didn't use rather than store them with batteries inserted and risk leakage. I also used a Sharpie to mark plus and minus on the battery trays, since it is difficult to see how to install the batteries unless one carefully observes how the old ones came out. In addition, I put a little arrow on the tab that unlocks the battery tray to ensure I don't break it off trying to open it in the heat of battle.I thought it was sort of difficult removing and re-inserting batteries, especially while standing on a ladder. You might consider practicing before installing the alarm.Installing the new mounting ring was made very easy due to the multitude of hole, slide and spacing choices. I had not installed a new alarm in about nine years, and this replacement was up and tested in about 10 minutes.

Easy,safe replacement and good brand.
Changed out my old smoke alarms with a complete set of these. I have used this brand before as carbon dioxide detectors before and was familiar with the brand. They were easy to wire and replace and came with all necessary hardware. ASo a good buy for the price.

Smoke Detectors need to be replaced every few years for SAFETY !!!! Who knew ???
Quick delivery. Product seems fine. We bought them as a replacement for the smoke detectors that were installed in our house when we had it built 15 years ago. They are the same brand and one of ours was going bad. Called the manufacturer and found out the average smoke detector only lasts about 10 to 15 years and then needs to be replace. Who knew??? Seems like that is something that should be told to the home buyer for safety reasons. I'm sure the average person has no idea how old their smoke detectors are or that they should be replaced every few years.

Details about BRK (Kidde) hard-wired alarms
This is a widely used hard wired (120VAC) fire alarm that uses three wires plus ground. There is a 9 volt back-up battery that is included. There are multiple versions of this product. If you want carbon monoxide detection, be sure to choose that (more expensive) model. If you want general smoke and fire protection only, choose the less expensive model. The carbon monoxide detector (that also includes smoke and fire detection) is likely to indicate a fault (starting making complaining tones) after about 6 years even though it is rated for 10 years. The smoke and fire version lasts at least 10 years. Refer to "Code" requirements or ask your local building inspector to determine where the detectors should go and what types you should use. Some jurisdictions require the use of batteries that will last for ten years (see the versions of this same product that have those special batteries). There is also a wi-fi version available which is of interest when doing retro-fits where there is no special fire alarm wiring. The wi-fi version is easy to install because you can place the unit using any "always on" electrical circuit since the alarm signal is carries using wi-fi.

Easy to use to replace old, outdated models
My originally installed fire alarms were well past the 10 year recommended time to replace them. The plug on these first alerts fit the plug on my old alarms so all I had to do was remove the old one and install the new one. Easy. I can rest easy now that I know my alarms are up to date. It pays to read or KEEP at least one of the pamphlets that comes with them. I had set off one of them when cooking and creating a bit of smoke. After that, the one in my bedroom kept blinking and when I was trying to sleep it was annoying. Finally, read the pamphlet and it stated that if one was set off, it would continue to blink until reset as a way to show the fire department where the fire started.I reset it and everything was fine. Only problem I have had and it wasn't really a problem (if I had read the pamphlet before...)

Great Replacement for older model fire alarm.
Who knew? Replace your fire alarms after 10 years. Our smoke detectors kept going off and we kept replacing batteries, buying more expensive batteries, blaming it on faulty wiring, faulty house alarm, etc. Finally, after the daughter and the dog suffered a nervous breakdown someone at my husband’s work said we should replace after 10 years. So daughter went to school and dog went to doggie day spa and I replaced all the alarms. So easy. The alarms come with batteries and new wiring. Didn’t need the wiring because the connectors for the old alarm and the new are the same.FYI we also learned during this whole process that while all the alarms sound when only one is faulty, the faulty one will have a red light, so you will know which alarm needs troubleshooting.
