Can this be used for thickness of envelopes?

yes, you can, and you should have the envelopes on a substrate, like a iron plate, or aluminum plate

Will this measure a clear coat lacquer on brass?

Can not friend, this gauge can measure the non-metallic coat or paint thickness on iron/aluminum/car steel only

Can it measure the thickness of an air compressor tank?

I use it to measure auto paint and body filler thickness. If you need to measure metal thickness you'll need an ultrasonic/magnetic industrial type measuring instrument... expensive.

Does it come with batteries included?

I just received mine today in hopes of using it this weekend to look at a car but mine did NOT include any batteries. So know I need to source two CR2032 batteries per the instructions.
