I just received this today and installed it. The spring coils are very loud when opening and closing the door.

Mine is quiet. Maybe you have the tension set too tight

Can you use this on a bifold door?

I’m not real sure. It’s going to give a gentle push near the hinges. Push on your bifold there. ( about 6-10 inches out). Does the door close? Then yes.

Can this door closer be set on the vertical inset of an external door jamb that opens outward?

Maybe, but I don't think you would want to use this product and have it exposed to the weather.
