When you serve with others you know they all have a story but you NEVER know their full story. This book allowed us to take a peek inside of what Dave went through. Knowing various pieces of the story helped put it all together. To know that one that grew up with so much against him still survive and achieve so much in life is always a great story to share with those living in similar situations. Military isn't the only way out but it is one way out if you use your time right.I loved the notes for those working with or wanting to work with kids with a hard background. Those notes are from someone that knows how to connect and teaching you how you can connect as well as reminding you that you may not be a fit for someone but you may know the perfect person to help get through to them.If you are looking for that real story and how to connect with kids or ideas on how you can help this book and author is a great read to help you get there!

David Armstrong’s authentic voice makes this memoir compelling. The resilience achieved through the author’s life journey given his childhood circumstances is exceptional. His significant contributions to youth enduring similar experiences and emotions offers readers the perspective of both the youth served and youth service providers. Those working with youth in any capacity will gain insight in how they can work personally and within systems to help young males grow into functioning adults — as well as an understanding of the emotional challenges abused and neglected children experience for a lifetime.

Enjoyed the reading and have to say I had many talks with Dave while servicing in the military. Everyone in the military has two stories. The story before the military and while they are serving. Instead of Dave falling into the trap of his environment he wanted more and have to say since knowing him has used all his experiences to better others around him. This book can help young trouble teens have a second chance. Glad to know him and has suggested this read to others.

This a great book! It is the story of overcoming childhood tragedy, crime and abuse. Many children growing up in David Armstrong's situation often end up in prison or dead. This is a story of triumph over tragedy, with a positive ending. I would recommend this book for at risk youth, mentors, judges and those working with troubled youth.

Why me by David Armstrong is an amazing book that I will recommend for inner city youth or anyone that believes there is no light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lot of detail along with moments that are tear jerkers and the book finishes with an amazing ending. This book this is less than 100 pages say so much without being repetitive. David Armstrong story is an inspiration and I look forward to seeing more purchase the book along with many more recommendations.Truth

In a brief amount of time, you will read a very powerful story of loss, pain, struggle, survival and triumph!! This book is a must read for anyone working in counseling or with at risk youth. When we say a person comes with "baggage," we are minimizing their story. The stories must be heard and there must be an understanding that these stories come from an extreme place of pain. Counselors, psychologists, social workers, foster parents and mentors David's story is a great learning experience!

Fantastic and enlightening.. definitely pulls on your heartstrings. Lets you know that no matter what you go through in life, you can overcome your circumstances and environment in order to move your life in a positive direction. A definite must read.

Dave's book was truly inspiring and heartfelt. For some folks, his story will make you shed some tears...but his delivery will definitely make you laugh out loud. Seeing how he overcomes extreme life challenges will motivate you and bring you hope. It also shines light on the perspective of at-risk youths. That is crucial for those who want to help and just generally make this world a better place. I couldn't put the book down and will definitely share with others.

This is a great book to read. It can inspire and motivate for sure. When you read the authors' life story you learn that you should never quit believing in yourself and that you can overcome all difficulties if you really want to until you succeed in the end!
