As an archaeologist who works in this region, I can attest that this book is THE comprehensive synthetic treatment that we all rely on. Akkermans and Schwartz are both respected experts on the region and run their own excavations in Syria. This book draws from their own experience and also synthesizes the available literature on this important region. The book is organized according to historical eras and gives a round-up description of the outstanding features of those eras. It is also clearly written and not jargony, so casual and amateur readers with a passion for the ancient world may also find it interesting.

Somewhat outdated now, but there is no newer equivalent. The information is still pretty good as far as it goes (missing a lot of the Weiss Climate debate, etc.)
