About artists, not paganism
This isn't intended to be a full review of the book, just a note in lieu of the editorial reviews that normally accompany for-pay books, intended for those browsing free Kindle e-books to help them decide if they might want to read this particular one.The book is a short novel, published in 1884, about a group of artists who called themselves the Pagans -- it isn't about paganism. The title page contains a short quotation from "All's Well That Ends Well" that perfectly sums up the plot: "The web of our life is a mingled yarn, good and ill together." The action of the story adequately demonstrates this, but that's about all it does. There is a subtheme about philistimism versus the need for honesty, integrity and sincerity in art, but it is dealt with quite superficially. (For a non-fiction look at these issues, I recommend Sincerity and Authenticity (Harvard Paperbacks) by Lionel Trilling.)The above plus lack of character development and stilted language led me to rate it only three stars.
