Review: This is my second Minn Kota. I use it in Salt water on my Archicillies dinghy with a waterproof charger mounted on the transom. This 55lb. Thrust motor pushes me around at 3.5 mph in a 10 foot hard bottom inflatable for over 2 hours on a 12 volt Group 27 AGM Sears Deep Cycle battery. My last Minn Kota was 44lbs. Thrust and the 55 is much better for my size of boat. Better than gas with easier start and no noise, great for a conservation with a friend. If I had $3500 to blow I would go with the 10 h.p. Torqueedo from Germany!!! The down side is its 36 volts and the batteries are too heavy for my size dinghy. I had a Honda 2.5 h.p. air cooled and only weighed 27 lbs. Great little engine with the least maintenance but very Loud at full throttle. Top speed was 5 mph with the gas Honda. Go Electric and enjoy the silence, It's Golden!!!
Review: I guess I waited 10 years to write this review. Mine is still like brand new, and runs perfectly. Used on fresh water lakes on a 16' old town poly canoe (about 70 lbs) on a twisted aluminum motor mount bolted to the transom (and also just bolted to the side of the transom, which works great too, and doesn't require a motor mount). I usually use it when I go out on a "beer float" with my wife (she thinks it is a wine float) with a 100 amp/hr lipo battery, or older lead acid battery. The lipo battery is awesome, nice and light, and lasts a long time - maybe 3-4 hours. And the motor is light too. That is a great setup for canoe. I usually run on setting 4 (goes 1 to 5 forward), and only switch to 5 when the battery gets low, and doesn't go as fast. Also, I put it on an old 12' aluminum v hull. It is too small really for that boat, with 2 people (ok for 1 if you don't want to go too fast). I'm getting a 55 lb thrust for the jon-boat (I have a bunch of outboards that are a lot nicer, but the battery is so nice for talking and having a nice outing with my wife). Anyway, for a canoe, I think 30 lbs thrust is enough. For jon-boat, go 55 lbs or more. Also, the old min-kotas that are smaller than 30 lbs are too small for a canoe. Anyway, this is the best way to motorize a canoe, in my opinion, as it is so quiet, and comfortable and light. I've tried outboards too, and they usually go too fast, and make too much noise, for going on a beer float with someone you want to visit with. We have other boats and set-ups ... but the canoe with the electric motor (and a reclining beach chair backwards in the front, reclining with a cup of wine) is my wife's favorite.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: is this battery good MinnKota Trolling Motor Power Center is this a good batter for infloatable boat.. also have to have battery in boat wont it get wet?? are cables long enough?? and need battery charger????**
A: About getting the battery wet: It doesn't matter. It won't hurt the battery and 12 volts is not going to travel in water or through your body. That's also why car lights keep going when cars sink in water; their batteries remain OK and the current flows only through the car wires which are copper and not out into the surrounding water which is a poor conductor by comparison. You won't get a shock if you grab the positive and negative terminals of a battery with your hands (even if you are barefoot and standing in water!). 12 volts needs a high conductivity wire, like copper or aluminum, to get from A to B. Not at all like the 110 or 220 volts that run through the wires in your house. Dropping a 120 volt hair dryer in the bathtub can get you a lethal shock if your bathroom's ground fault circuit breaker doesn't trip as it should. Don't be confused as to why you get a shock off spark plugs: The current reaching them comes through a coil or similar mechanism that ups the voltage so the spark will be able to jump across a spark plug, but it also drops the available current. That's why such a shock won't kill you like a shock from house wiring could. Same concepts apply to electric fences: Their shock is potent but won't kill. These concepts can be hard to grasp but that's the bottom line.

**Q: I'm new at this. I'm looking to get the Intex Seahawk 4 person boat. I plan on getting the motor mount kit. what all do I need to make this work?**
A: The best thing is to get a lithium battery. You can buy 12v (equivalent) lithium iron phosphate battery. Or you can adopt lithium ion battery like one used for RC stuff or EV bicycles (you will need to modify the latter b/c they much higher voltage). Lead batteries die quickly and weight tens of pounds. I got myself LiIo battery and can not be happier. It weights about 6 pounds but works better than 130Ah/66lbs trojan battery it replaced. Also, you can make motor mounting kit yourself, very easy if you can do a few straight cuts in plywood. All these battery protection and cut off circuits and such are not really needed. Talking from decades of boating experience and my EE degree.

**Q: Wpuld the 30 thrust push my kayak good? All my gear and me weigh probably 350 including kayak.**
A: We carry 2 people (combined weight 320lb) in an 85 lb boat+motor+60lb battery + fishing gear and it moves quite well, except into a brisk wind at low power. It does fine with the "throttle" open+ gets good "battery mileage"

**Q: Inquiring if this motor not too strong for trolling for trout, I have a Intex Mariner 3**
A: It's perfect anywhere between speed 1 and 3 for trout. Just has a high battery drain. i used on intex seahawk. It is better made then the bass pro prowler, but the bass pro drains less battery.

I've used this motor now for two fishing seasons. It's reliable, quiet and exactly what I need to push my little boat around the lake. Using this motor with a 90 amp hour battery, I get about one long day of fishing in, so it's helpful to pack along a second battery just in case. It's light, packs up tight, and comes apart easily if you need to change the prop or unwind fishing line that gets inside the housing. This is a great motor for the price. Highly recommended!
