Is there some secret to sliding off the back to insert batteries? Will not slide off

I tried one of the suggestions for removing the battery case cover by gently prying off the shiny part of the case cover. I tried this and the shiny part broke off. It works without the cover but I'll probably glue it back on. Judging from the quality it'll probably stop working before the batteries wear out!
