A simple, muted, pale wood, not overly lacquered, a pleasant contrast to the melamine surface, which is indeed jet-black as advertised.Be advised that the 24" x 36 " measurement refers to the entire board-plus-frame ensemble, and not to the writing surface.So far, wipes clean easily; we'll see how it ages.Comes with some helpful cursory instructions/suggestions for use and cleaning. I love using those wet chalk markers because they look vibrant. I use the board to help me visual homework problems.
