With the exception of a couple of songs, the music is restful- nice background music to accomplishing tasks or reading. And the opera duet is divine!

Solemn themes underscore the trials of men in prison. Well done!

This is a beautiful recording, a perfect match to a brilliant and uplifting movie. This musical score is etheric and deeply moving. It makes you soar, makes you sad, but above all, makes you feel glad to be alive.I agree with another reviewer who would have liked to have heard some of Morgan Freeman's wonderful narration along with the music, but that's OK, the music stands brilliantly all by itself.There are 3 tunes not written by Thomas Newman, 2 of which tend to jar you out of the musical mood the rest of the score presents. I just cut these 2 tracks out when I'm playing the disc.This is music you can float to. It's like watching clouds, you see and feel the textures the composer threads through the music. It's different every time I listen to it, always yielding something new. Sometimes I like to turn out the lights, close my eyes, and just let the music transport me. It has a dreamlike quality which gets me in contact with a deeper part of myself.To me it is deeply spiritual and uplifting, not just a recording, but a musical experience.

As a big collector of movie scores, this is definitely a must-own for those who love film music. I believe that one of the reasons that "The Shawshank Redemption" has become such a popular and beloved film is because of the memorable music. Two tracks stand out as my favorites - the Shawshank Prison theme (Tr. 2) and End Titles (Tr. 21). The overall score seems a bit sad and depressing, but that's one of the things that makes it stand apart from other movie scores. This CD also includes a few actual songs with lyrics as well as the opera music that is briefly featured in the film.The four stars is because the score has a few weak tracks. Also, those like me who care about the insert pages and the artwork/design on the disc face - the Shawshank CD has nothing special. But the overall score as a whole is great. The composer is Thomas Newman. Two other scores I also highly recommend from Newman are Road to Perdition and Revolutionary Road.

Absolutely amazing movie, and one of the things that makes it so great is it's soundtrack. Thomas Newman's music is absolutely beautiful, haunting, inspiring, thrilling and outstanding! If you love the movie, then you'll totally love this soundtrack as well-- listening to it makes you picture the movie scenes in your head so vividly. One of my favorite soundtracks ever!

This is primarily for the hard core fans of the score. The alternate versions alone are justification big enough to purchase it. The second disc contains alternate takes and extended versions of some of the tracks present on the original release. I have cherished and immensely enjoyed the score for YEARS and the previously unreleased material will keep me busy for more to come. Thank you Thomas Newman for a truly remarkable work.
