I CAN say that if you do get the Japanese made version (as I did) you will be getting a top notch scale that is as good an instrument as you could hope for, and I'd put it up against any other brand available, including a certain U.S. manufacturer of over-priced machinist's tools. The surface of the 182-101 has a smooth satin finish that cuts glare, the divisions are sharp and easy to read, the edges are flat and perfectly square. Also, where I work, (I'm an inspector at a shipyard) our instruments must be certified, this scale passed our metrology lab's tests with no problem. Go ahead and order, if it says Mitutoyo on it, you will be getting a great instrument. **Q: Country of mfg?** A: Country of manufacture is Japan. **Q: does this have any flex to it? Looking for a rigid ruler.** A: Very rigid rule. It was of English manufacture and except for half the edges that were wasted on metric scales (useless in US woodworking) I felt it was adequate. I found the Mitutoyo 182-101 with only imperial graduations and am now aware of what I had been missing. The thin, crisp markings and satin finish make the Mitutoyo so easy to read. The inch numerals are clear and read left to right and right to left. The fractional scales are so precise that two of the engraved lines will easily fit between the marks on the 1/64" scale. Most of the time the 64ths scale is almost a blur on lesser makes. The edge machining presents a ground square surface and makes a precise pencil or knife line yet still feels comfortable to the hand with an almost undetectable yet adequate easing of the corners.
