## Description

Your life’s an adventure. To capture and keep its best moments, you need fast, high-capacity storage that accelerates every move. 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds let you store your content and creations on a fast drive that fits seamlessly into your active lifestyle. Up to two-meter drop protection (3), with IP55 water and dust resistance (3), a carabiner loop for securing the drive. From the brand trusted by professional photographers, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD provides fast solid state performance in a tough, reliable storage solution. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user capacity less. Up to 1050MB/s read speed, up to 1000MB/s write speed. Engineered with proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s, requires compatible devices capable of reaching such speed. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes. (1) See official SanDisk website. (2) Password protection uses 256-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 8, Windows 10 and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required for Mac, see official SanDisk website.) (3) Based on internal testing. IPEC 60529 IP 55: Tested to withstand water flow (30 kPa) at 3 min.; limited dust contact does not interfere with the operation. Must be clean and dry before use.

Review: Fast, reliable, and perfect for backing up photos and video - I’ve been using the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (1TB) to back up photos and video, and it’s been one of the most useful pieces of gear in my kit. Transfer speeds are genuinely fast, so moving large batches of RAW files or video clips takes minutes instead of forever. Drives in this line are rated around 1000–1050 MB/s read and ~1000 MB/s write, which makes a noticeable difference when working on tight timelines. The size and build are a big plus. It’s small enough to keep in a pocket or camera bag, and the rubberized shell feels rugged. These drives are designed with water and dust resistance and drop protection, which gives some peace of mind when traveling or shooting outdoors. Setup is simple with USB-C, and the included cable and adapter make it easy to use with both newer laptops and older USB-A ports. I’ve used it for everything from field backups to editing directly off the drive, and it’s been consistently reliable. If there’s one small downside, it’s that like most compact SSDs, it can get slightly warm during long transfers, but nothing concerning. Overall, it’s a great portable SSD, especially for photographers, videographers, or anyone who moves large files regularly. Fast, durable, and easy to carry, which is exactly what you want in a travel drive.
Review: A Solid Option - This seems to work pretty well. I don't have much to compare it to, since my last external drive was a disk drive, but it transfers data relatively fast and I like the password protection feature that comes with it. I haven't tested the limits of the storage, but I have used it right after it was in the cold (about 15°F) and it worked well. It's also a nice compact size, but not so small that it can get lost easy. Overall, I think this is a solid option for external storage. I bought a case for it separately, and it gives me some additional peace of mind that it won't be damaged, so I would recommend buyers do that, too. Is it worth the price? So far, so good. I'll definitively say yes if it's still working well in eight years or so (that's how long my old external disk drive is and it still functions well).

- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)

## Questions & Answers

**Q: how much faster is this than an external HDD?**
A: With an SSD over HDD, you're obviously paying for the increase in speed. Nobody actually answered your question of "how much faster." Even though it's been over a year now, maybe it will help someone else. A typical portable HDD speed seems to be about 120 Mbps, whereas this drive claims 1,050 MBps read and 1,000 write. So about 8 or 9 times faster.

Also, it is pretty fast relative to other portable SSDs. 1 GBps seems to be about the standard right now for drives in this price range. The T7 quotes the same speed, from what I can tell. Definitely not "3-4x" faster. The X5 quotes twice the speed (at twice the price).

**Q: How to get the full 1000 mb/s? only getting about 800 mb/s write and 700 mb/s read. plugged directly into a macbook air m1 (2020). blackmagic test**
A: The numbers quoted are for the raw data rate - how fast the drive can accept bits. You will never see this in real life. Some factors affecting real-world performance include:

* File system overhead. Your file system (whether FAT, NTFS, HFS, APFS, ext or anything else) has overhead. This overhad consumes bandwidth, but you won't see it in a benchmark that only measures the data used by your files.
* Your testing application may not be getting enough CPU cycles or USB bandwidth to be able to push data at the device's maximum speed. Testing labs use a computer with a specialized operating system that can ensure sufficient bandwidth, but an app running on a normal operating system can't make such a guarantee.

**Q: It's not showing up on my ntfs for mac but is in finder. also keeps asking me to authenticate in order to do anything with it?**
A: Ntsf is a windows format. A Mac will not write to it natively. You will need to get 3rd party software like Paragon or another to fully work with a ntsf formatted hard drive on a Mac. Format it to apfs if it is only going to be used on a Mac or buy ntfs for Mac software if you need to go back and forth.

**Q: Can I use this as an additional storage *continuously* connected to my mac? any overuse or overheat issues?**
A: Since my poor MacBook Pro 2016 has gotten slower because I refuse to update the OS (because I know what would happen), I started using my 2TB 1050mbps SSD Sandisc external drive for my heavy video editing and music production projects and it flies without any problem. I would say though that it is true that at some point it gets quite hot but nothing’s affected it’s performance. My advise is just connect it when you need it and that’s it. I love this little friend!!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Quality work in a small package!! Love this!
*by B***Y on February 15, 2026*

This is a great, compact external storage device suitable for documents, photos, and videos. I have the 2TB one and it holds all the info I need it to. I will likely purchase a secondary one in the future in order to separate my side hustle documents. I found the use of this portable SSD to be extremely simple and quick to figure out. Files transferred very quickly and quietly without overheating the devices in use. I appreciate the type C ports to plug directly into my MacBook, with the option to have a USB port for other computers. Highly recommend and likely will purchase another in the future.
