These work well and repel ants. They are wide enough to not be easily bypassed when full. They also add extra color, and a in a nice flower shape, to attract attention.Light cons or work required. You must do your part. They must be filled to avoid going dry. They must be cleaned or emptied to avoid being a Perfect mosquito breeding ground. You could probably put soap in the water to make them more effective, but I'm afraid of hummers drinking that.Be aware of your choices. You have a water moat (like this), a metal oil coated moat, and a chemical moat. There are also some flat style feeders with built in moats. Finally you can try coating the hook or wire with oil to repel ants.Cost/pros/cons Vs other moats. Chemical (stop worrying about the word chemical) are much more convenient to me. Chemical ones don't last forever though, so for the same price these are more work, but will last years (not sure about sun damage and fading) vs 1 year/season. The metal oil ones are more expensive, but should last indefinitely and take less maintenance. I use chemical repellent on feeders away from the hose, and these near where I am watering plants anyway.

So many moats are small and don’t prevent a great barrier to invasion of the Hummingbird feeders because the water evaporates in a few short days of Summer heat. These moats are not only a great size to hold enough water, but they are extremely durable! After use during 3 hot Midwest Summers, and being left outside in cold, icy Winters, there’s NO fading, cracking, or degradation of the body of the moat, and NO rusting or weakening of the attached hooks! Nicely made and ready to use, make your feeder easy to hang or remove and add a place to trap/stop ants and creepy-crawlies getting in the feeder.

I have been using these for 3 months now and they work great. Not sure why anyone cares if they fade as the birds are attracted to the feeder anyway although mine have not faded and they are in direct sun. My feeders are all hanging so there is no way for ants to get to the feeder without going through the moat. Maybe the person who gave it a one star because ants still got in feeder did not put enough water in and the ants were able to use the inside of the moat to then get to the outside. I fill mine half full and have not had a problem. Pretty darn sturdy holding even the heavy glass 32 ounce feeders. The water lasts all day even in the 3 digit temperatures we have been having in Texas the last 3 weeks although I have had to bring them in every night the last several weeks because raccoons have discovered them and with the heat we have been having need to change the nectar everyday anyway.

Works well for keeping ants out of bird seed.

These make it so much easier when I put out my hummingbird feeders! I don’t have moats on some of them and these really help. Plus they look great!!

Yo tenia el problema de que mi bebedero para colibries siempre se llenaba de hormigas. Aunque intentaba dejarlo lo mas separado posible de las ramas siempre encontraban una manera de llegar a el.Desde que puso este foso, ni una hormiga ha podido superarlo. Un poco de agua adentro es mas que suficiente para alejar a cualquier insecto y mantener tu liquido limpio. Mis colibries lo adoran.

These seem to work as described. Ive had it for a few months now and it seems to hold up well in high sun location. minimal fading but I just need to remember to fill the cup with water more often. Ants seem to stay out.

Had ants in humming bird feeder. Purchased this. No more ants!

It does the job for my purposes, which is mainly water for Birds. I bought 2 metal Aunt traps, but they were smaller and in 2 years faded a lot. I hung them from these new ones and the hook quality is superior in the metal ones but they hold less water. Will be interested to see the fading times of these plastic type - they do look good.
