Once I figured that out m, they were easy to open. Hold the mounting plates with fingers on top and thumb on furthest edge on both sides. Go to the product listing and look at the photos carefully to figure it out. You may want to temporarily screw them to two pieces of scrap wood to see just how they work and for spacing. 2) It may seem at first that they don't work and won't bend. They will, but when they aren't attached to anything you don't have much leverage, and the way they bend is a little inobvious. You *can* open and close them with just your fingers (but don't get pinched), but it may take some fooling around to figure it out. 3) They come with non-ideal screws. You really want pan-head screws about the same size. 4) These are not 'normal' hinges! These are hidden hinges and/or for situations where one moving part needs to be extended outward to clear the non-moving part. If you're not sure why you need this specific type of hinge, odds are good that this isn't the type of hinge you need. I've installed them, though, and they work fine, and they seem sturdy. Price is good. Packaging, etc, not so good.
