    Transferable methodologies

As has been mentioned this book has been designed for pharmaceutical students studying within the US mainly due to it using Imperial measurements in its calculations. However as far as the basic principles and methodologies are concerned then this is fully relevant and transferable so to those ends its a very useful guide on the subject matter.

Pharmaceutical Calculations Paperback – 7 Apr 2017The book.This is a book about the various pharmaceutical calculation and how to use them with worked examples. It is an American publication but easily understood and adapted to the UK market.Audience.This is obviously aimed at Pharmaceutical chemistry students and other students doing pharmaceutical modules. It is well written and the explanations are very good and useful.Approach.It uses a scenario and worked examples approach. The examples are complete and don’t assume anything. You need a good level of maths to follow this book but that is who it is aimed at.Coverage.To me being a biochemist it seem very comprehensive and to the point. It makes a good primer on how maths is used in determining dosage and drug development.Overall.A well written and presented book on essential calculations for pharmacy students.  Good presentation and coverage will make this a very good companion to any course needing these calculations. The part on prescription is largely for the American market but there is still plenty here for students in the UK.

The only reason why I gave this four stars instead of five is that it is based at the US market which operates in a slightly different way to how the UK pharmaceutical industry operates: i.e. compounding and prescriptions. However, that said, this has still found it's way onto some university reading/required text lists and that's probably more about the methodology of calculating dosages. The text itself is relatively easy to follow if you have a reasonable grounding in maths and has plenty of worked examples to test understanding. A well written text but aimed at a very niche market..
