What are the batteries for?

It is a website error. No batteries are included nor required.

Will a king size matress fit on it

No...you can see that there is a light brown surface, with the two black rails from the pictures...a Full size mattress spans just inside the edges of those two black rails (so to be honest, you can see a bit of the tan surface). A Queen mattress will actually sit "up on" those two rails, and be even with the very edges of the bed. I am afraid that a King mattress would hang over quite a bit.--Be aware that no matter the mattress you choose...there are quite possibly a large number of other bed frames that will be better than this one will...even for what seems like an inexpensive amount of money to pay...would I trade this for something else, if I could?...in an instant

does this need a slatted bed base sold seperately?

No. It has a plywood solid base with it as shown in the picture. We just had to assemble the bed and put the mattress on the top. There is no head-board though.

Can I attach a headboard?
