Solid addition to the series, but has a couple of problems.
It’s a good read, I enjoyed it regardless of a couple flaws. I’ll still be reading the next one, for sure. There will be minor spoilers ahead, so turn back now if that will bother you.So, a list:1. The pacing was a bit off, didn’t seem to flow as well as previous entries.2. Building up a super OP character is all well and good, but the antagonists you set against him should actually be a threat. Demol lords, Fae lords, immortal wizards... should not drop like punks in two paragraphs.3. The author needs to remain aware of their story’s context. This is a pre-industrial age medieval world with magic and fantasy monsters. The term “serial killer” is a product of modern forensic psychology and criminal profiling. It’s not going to exist in this kind of world. There are other instances of things like this.4. I didn’t feel as invested in the characters this time, seemed like they were just drifting through the pages without doing many meaningful things.5. The whole thing did not seems to do much to advance the meta plot/story.

the book that rivals them all
this book was a pretty good however i will be very disappointed if it ends here. i loved the series as a hole. i the last 4 books have been the only books i have actually wanted to read in the past 6 years and i hope i can find that where will be one last one tying all the world building and training together however this ended to well to make me believe that i will see that come to fruition. nor will a new ending do the previous books justice. i was originally going to give a 4 star but it dawned on me that over the 2 years that i have been reading this series i have re lessoned to them multiple times so thanks for the hours of enjoyment and take my 5 stars.

A worthy new addition to this great series.
Oh MC is finally becoming the OP spell slinging Wizard we were promised in the first book. My only complaint is there wasn't enough scenes with a couple characters but considering the quality of the rest of the book all I can do is wait for the next installment. So 👍!

A Truly Great Book
I've come to expect nothing but great books from Michael G Manning. I've been a fan since his first book came out and I got a $0.99 deal on Amazon and his books just keep getting better and better. The Disciple of War is another that should not be missed. I recommend you read the whole Art of the Adept series, as well as, his Mageborn books.

Can't wait for number 5
As always, Manning does a fantastic job. While there are a few things that don't read as surprising, even though they seem to be intended as such, the development of the characters and their relationships with each other grow and adjust as though they are real people within these events. Worst part about this book is finishing it, because it leaves you wanting more. Which, in hindsight, i think is the whole point.

Another great read
I love the banter from these characters. It reminds me of my days in the military. Rough humor and great jabs. Betrayals come up from some unforeseen, places and foreseen ones. Real losses that come with tough situations that feel real despite the fantasy. Once again I was engrossed.

Great story. Great writing.
So many things to love about this series. The magic is intricate and interesting, the court politics is sophisticated and the plot is well written, but this author really shines in his relationships. Highly recommended.

Very good
A great addition to the story with so.e great character development. Both realistic and needed yet done in a natural and good way. I really enjoy who the characters are becoming.

Disappointing
It seems our main character Will and most of his friends and family have regressed to a level of a twelve year old middle schoolers. The plot is weak, most of the book is just dull and childish conversations between Will and his wife, or his sister, Will cannot take two steps forward without having completely pointless and irrelevant dialog with friends and family while in the middle of military campaign!!! Most situations Will and his friends find themselves in are frankly stupid and juvenile at best. All of that sense of adventure, magic and mystery present in the first three books is just not there anymore. Forget Arrogan, the Cat or even king Lognion and other character from previous books, they are hardly even mentioned in the book 4, the new characters are one dimensional, the villains dull and uninteresting. This book has nothing going for it, in fact it so bad that it ruins the otherwise excellent series.

Anouther fascinating take on magic
The first great thing about this author, is that he takes magic and looks at it like a science, for me this makes the stories more believable, it gives the powerful creatures definitive limits and makes the main character vulnerable even at their most overpowered. - It also helps that he is not above killing VERY major characters when its warranted. The Second great thing is how genuine the character interactions feel, no-one feels like a Mary sue and no character an unstoppable paragon of pure goodness.Flaws keep the narrative interesting and there is interest aplenty to be found.

Fantastic!
I absolutely loved all four of The Adept books. The storytelling had a really nice pace to it and I found myself remembering much of what I had read, even information and events from the previous books in the series. The writing was clear and easy to understand throughout. Character development was fantastic and there is a sense of growth in the main protagonist as we journeyed from book one to four. I enjoyed each of the characters, but my favourite character is Will's mentor, Arrogan. Arrogan is a foul-mouthed, short-tempered old fart who made me laugh each time he piped up. I had David Bradley's (actor who played Walder Frey in Game of Thrones, and Argus Filch in Harry Potter) image in my head whenever I imagine how Arrogan might look and sound. I also enjoyed the cheeky, humourous tongue-in-cheek moments here and there. The only disappointment was that there is no book 5 yet! Chop chop Michael G. Manning! Guess I'll go and read the Mageborn series for the moment. :P
