Larry the monster is up to his usual shenanigans in this USA Today bestseller by Bill Cotter. A great read-aloud, interactive picture book that kids will go back to time and again. There's only one rule in Larry's book: don't push the button. (Seriously, don't even think about it!) Even if it does look kind of nice, you must never push the button. Who knows what would happen? Okay, quick. No one is looking... push the button. Uh, oh. Why readers love the Don't Push the Button series: Celebrate curiosity with this silly monster book A fun read-aloud and bedtime book Screen-free fun for kids Makes a great gift for children! She Absolutely Adores "Breaking the Rules"!
I grabbed "Don't Push the Button!" knowing my daughter loves books where she can interact and feel like she's part of the action. This one was a total home run. The whole idea of being told not to do something, and then getting to do it anyway, is just peak comedy for her at this age. She gets this wonderfully impish look on her face right before she "pushes" the button on the page, and the silly things that happen to Larry (the monster) as a result make her shriek with laughter. What I Liked (Pros): Makes Reading Active: My daughter feels like she’s really in charge. She enthusiastically shakes the book, pretends to tickle Larry, and, of course, smashes that illustrated button with gusto. Guaranteed Giggles: The playful defiance is a huge part of the fun. She loves the anticipation of what will happen next after she "pushes." Easy for Her to Follow: The words are simple, and there aren't too many per page. She’s even started to recognize some of the repeated words, which is a nice little bonus for her early reading journey. Sparks Her Own Ideas: Even though the book guides the interaction, she often makes up her own little sound effects or tells me what else she thinks might happen to Larry. What I Didn't Love So Much (Cons): It's a Great Gag, But It's One Gag: The button is the central theme, and while the results are different each time, the core concept is the same. She isn't bored yet, but I can see how some kids might want more variety after many reads. Definitely a "Daytime" Read for Us: This one gets her pretty energized with all the giggling and movement, so it's not our first pick for winding down before bed. FYI: The Button is a Picture: Just so other parents know, it's an illustration, not a physical button. My daughter didn't seem to care one bit and played along happily, but it's worth mentioning. Overall: This book is just brilliant for a fun, engaging read-aloud. If your kiddo enjoys being a little mischievous and seeing funny outcomes, they'll probably be as charmed by Larry as mine is. It’s a regular request in our reading rotation now.
