Improved CD/DVD printing and scans over the network with one tweak
I bought this printer primarily for printing on printable CD/DVDs. I had previously owned 2 older models of Epson CD printers (the RX580 and R320) so when I cracked open the box, the first thing I was looking for was the special CD printing tray. I couldn't find it. I thought maybe my shipment had a mistake. I looked all over the printer and couldn't see how to print CDs. Even the product manual never mentioned how to print on CD/DVDs which was very strange because the software on the installation disc installed the Epson Print CD application. I was starting to think maybe I needed to pay extra for this feature or for the tray. You can imagine as a previous Epson owner of 2 different models why this would stir up a lot of confusion.I even had to go back to amazon and read some reviews to confirm if this printer can actually print on CDs. I found a couple of reviewers who said it printed on CDs fine, so I continued to look further. Finally I discovered the not-so-intuitive button on the front panel of the printer which looked like a CD. Once you hit that button, a built-in CD printing tray comes out. It's a part of the printer so you cannot pull it out. You simply lay your CD/DVD on the tray, then hit that CD button to have the tray go back into the front panel and then you're ready to print. I docked one star on my review because of all the confusion.Needless to say, it prints on CDs and DVDs much better this way because with the older Epson models, I had so many bugs where sometimes it keeps ejecting the tray complaining about misfeeds or doesn't fully eject the tray after printing and complaining about jams. And for those that have experiences with past Epson CD printing, it sure takes a long time to print a CD as the tray goes through some sort of initial alignment phase backing in and out until it finally starts printing. Well, all this is gone with the Artisan's built-in CD tray. Once you hit the CD button to let the built-in tray go back in, it pretty much starts printing when I hit print on my computer and it's much faster. It just took a little time to figure out that the tray was built-in and I wish the instructions mentioned it.As for scanning over the network, it really does work. I saw some reviewers say it didn't work for them. However, you have to tweak your Windows firewall to allow Epson Scan. I use XP and here's how I did it:Once you get to the Windows Firewall settings, you go to the Exceptions tab and hit "Add Program" button. From there you should see a choice for EPSON Scan. That's it and it should work. One other important thing I want to mention is the Epson Status Monitor 3 can't seem to monitor ink levels over the network (over USB connection is fine). I think it has to do with that piece of Epson software not supporting a specific IP-based protocol so it can't communicate with the printer. One workaround is to simply go to the display of the Artisan printer and go through the onboard menus to find the ink status. I guess the other workaround is to only use USB, but it's really much nicer to print over the network, and even better over wireless (if you have a wireless router you can configure the printer to connect to). Currently I print and scan over my wireless network and the only thing I can't do is monitor my ink levels due to what I mentioned above. I'm ok with it and I hope one day Epson will have a patch for their Status Monitor app to make it possible to monitor my ink levels over the network.I haven't tested photo printing or regular text printing as I'm sure they will be fine knowing Epson's excellent reputation in those areas. I'll let the other reviewers comment on those aspects.

A solid all-in-one with particularly good photo printing
I'm pretty hard on printers and have been through most of the major vendors over the years, including HP, Canon and Lexmark. After swearing off HP for reasons I won't get into here, I decided to give Epson a shot. As it turns out, after using this machine for about 3-4 months now, I'm very pleased with its performance. The wireless is easy to setup on both Mac OS X and Windows 7/XP. Control panel is wonderfully intuitive - you actually don't need a computer at all to shoot photos straight to the printer from your camera. Additionally, it does fast, accurate scans and copies. The printer sleeps when not in use and rarely has to be touched. You can safely stash it in a cabinet and never have to worry about fooling around with until it's time to load paper and cartridges. Speaking of cartridges, they are relatively well priced and seem to last an extraordinarily long time.Unlike the HP, this Epson's included cartridges were "full capacity", rather than "demo" units. We ran through several dozen printed pages as well as over 100 4x6" photos before the "low ink" warning started to appear (and even then, it still went right on printing, unlike the HP). I've noticed a few reviews that state this printer can't do wireless scanning... I'm not sure if this was just an improvement in the driver, but my Artisan 725 will definitely scan over the network - both on the Mac and my Windows boxes. My only criticism, and what keeps me from rating this 5 stars, is the paper tray. It's flimsy, the guides require a bit of fuss (particularly with my 4x6 photo stock, which has a bit of a natural bend to it) and it doesn't have great paper capacity in general. Otherwise, the unit seems solidly built, albeit with quite a big footprint. The printer it replaced was physically much smaller.All-in-all, this has been one of the best printers I've owned in recent memory. The only one that ranks a close second was my Canon Pixma MP500, which was only retired because I needed a wireless printer.
