Perfect for horse owner involvement in hoof care between farrier visits
This rasp is just what I needed to maintain a rolled edge and smooth out small chips from stomping flies so that they don't get bigger between trims by my farrier. I have small hands, and this is easy to handle. It has a strong magnet in it, so I can stick it in a place where it's out of the way but still easy to grab when I need it. The "cheese grater" teeth on the rasp are very sharp and work without a lot of pressure, but are fine enough not to take off hoof faster than I want for the sort of "cleanup" I am using this for. I have a low-end full sized rasp, but it is not as sharp so it takes more efforts and it's rather unwieldy so I don't often bring it out to take care of little chips. This radius rasp can live close to the tack-up area so it's handy any time I notice that the fly stomping is taking a toll on the hoof wall.I have to say it also shipped incredibly fast. I'm very happy I decided to purchase this!

Great for in between trim cycles
What a great little rasp! I have a wonderful farrier. However, within those five or six week rotations, sometimes my horse gets some chips and cracks in his hooves; especially in the summer stomping at flies. This thing is great for in between trims to keep them from turning in to a much larger issue. I debated which one to get, the black or white one and chose the white with the finer blade in fear I would be able to take off too much. I know a little about hooves but definitely am wary when it comes to doing more damage than good by trying to “fix it myself.” I bought it and ran it by my farrier before using it. He said it would be just fine to use. I did my first hoof and wow, it really got those edges smooth. I was out of breath and exhausted by three legs and sat down to rest and admire my work. It was 95° and I don’t have a hoof stand which made it a bit more difficult. Nothing in comparison to a regularly shaped rasp though. I like this so much, I may get the black one too just in case I ever need it. I wish it was a bit cheaper in price but that hand hold and shape are worth it I suppose. It’s super easy to maneuver and hold. It’s holding it and the hoof at the same time that’s problematic. My hat is tipped for those trimmers and shoers that do multiple equines a day. Phew! This is great and I don’t see the blade dulling for a while. I will use it maybe once or twice every six weeks and see how long it lasts. Very happy with this product and very happy that I found it! Thanks!

Awesome product
I am so thankful for this product. It is easy to use and does the job. I have a "navicular" horse who had SEVERE lameness after being in "high heels" and upon doing my own research, found (not only to keep him barefoot as he had always been prior to the injury) if you file their hooves back every couple days you can help them heal and promote soundness between trimmings. My guy would do great for the first week-two weeks after a trim, then would start limping again. I invested in a hoof rehabber / trimmer to get his trim/angles right and I just started filing in between. So far, the results are wonderful. Being that I am not a professional trimmer, this little tool comes in super handy. It is so easy to use and I don't have to worry about taking too much off. I can just go around his hooves a few times every couple days to keep his toes back and keep him progressing in the right direction between trimmings. Since I started this, it's been 3 weeks since his last trim and he is walker better then he has in over a year! No limp, lengthening his stride, and landing heel first. I hope the results continue. I also use it to file out any chips on my other 2 horses between trims. It's a great product. I highly recommend it!

I wanted this to be great
I watched the videos on these products and discussed them with my barefoot trimmer before purchasing. I decided on the finer handheld rasp. I was really looking forward to having this to use between trims. We do have our horses hooves trimmed every 6 wks. When I received this rasp, the blade was only half way in...I had to pound the rasp part into the handheld plastic piece. And still had about a half inch sticking out. It was ok to use, the finer toothed rasp was maybe not the one I should of started with. It just wasn't for us.

This is a fabulous tool for home trimming or maintenance!
I purchased this tool to help me maintain my horses' feet between trims and, in combination with the other version (the pro), keep up on feet when my farrier is not able to be out regularly. This finer plane produces hoof shavings much like finely shredded Parmesan cheese; I feel safe using this as a novice trimmer as I can't take too much off at once. The tool is small enough to be comfortable in my (relatively small female) hands, and I like being able to use either hand to use it. This rasp creates a lovely rolled edge; my first thought on using it was "where was this years ago!" as I had a (now passed) barefoot OTTB who's feet would start to chip and get worse over time - being able to head off the chips early on with this product and getting a much more even, finely rounded edge than my trimmers produce currently would have spared her a lot of foot soreness and damage. I've included a photo taken after my first trim (post lunging, pardon the slush) to illustrate that this finer rasp creates a lovely rounded edge, but doesn't take off a ton of foot, which is why there is still a chip evident, rounded down from a pretty large chunk chipped off. This product produces a beautiful finish and I'm excited to use it in concert with the black Pro rasp to maintain my horses' feet more actively and capably than I have ever been able to do so before.
