Becoming an Art Teacher

In studying for the Texes EC-12 Art exam, the preparation materials did not list a book for the teaching of art, just the content of art: art history, various techniques, critical readings. But the test also includes questions on teaching of art as well. I didn't know that I'd need specific information until I took a practice test.The contents of this book include Preparing for Teaching, Moving into the Classroom, Focusing on each of the major areas (Creating Art, Art History, Critiquing, and so on), with a great deal of emphasis on planning good, solid lessons.Ms. Bates drew on her years in the classroom teaching art at the lower levels to give her university students what they needed to be successful in the classroom. What started in her classroom and from her own background grew into this volume with her students in the university feeding back to her their needs and concerns becoming, in some ways, her teachers.Created as a text for a "methods" course (methods of teaching art), I am grateful to be able to acquire it to study and prepare for a new phase in my teaching career: teaching art to middle school students.

Seller is great. Got the book fast . But the book is so boring!

I like this book because it steers teachers toward teaching creativity instead of making their students create multiples of the same painting or form. It teaches different components of teaching art as well; such as art history, aesthetics, etc. I would recommend this book to any art teacher.

I bought this book for my daughter, who is studying to be an Art teacher, and she really likes it.It was mandatory for school, but the professor recommended it highly, and so I can see it becoming a permanent part of her library.

Excellent book on teaching art. Don't be fooled by the corny cover, this is a legit book for any serious artists who also want to be excellent teachers.

It will be an asset in my classes at college and I look forward to using it and the price was very reasonable.

This is the best written book on the subject that I have seen. As someone who is training art teachers how to teach, this is a perfect introduction to the overall history of art education (brief, but to the point)why we do what we do, and how to get the message/art methods across to the students. Terrific!
